RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Coming into Friday's matchup, No. 4-ranked Dixie State hadn't conceded a loss in PacWest Play. While the Red Storm shut out No. 19 California Baptist University 6-0 in the first game, the Lancers broke through in the nightcap, but couldn't put a blemish on the visitors' conference mark, falling 3-1.
Dixie State improves to 33-6, 22-0 in conference, while CBU falls to 32-8 overall and 19-5 in the PacWest.
In the second game of the day, CBU set the tone from the first batter. Kayla Hatch slipped strike three past a Red Storm batter. Her defense backed her up and grabbed the next two outs to take their first turn at the plate.
The Lancers broke the scoreless streak on a two-out rally, taking a 1-0 lead. Krista Mann led with a one-out single up the middle and was joined on base by Kailey Willingham, who drew ball four. Jacque Lopez sent in Mann with a similar base hit, finding the gap up the middle.
Dixie State took over the lead in the third and tacked on another run in the fifth to increase its lead to 3-1.
CBU got some energy in the bottom of the sixth as Willingham drew a free trip to first on ball four and Lopez laid down a bunt single to put two runners on. The Red Storm kept the runners from rounding third, however, grabbing a double play to end the inning.
Hatch continued to throw dimes past batters to keep Dixie State from adding to its score line in the top of the seventh as CBU headed back on offense in the bottom half of the frame.
The Lancers got runners on base, but couldn't send them home to fall 3-1.
Jenna Lieber was the only Lancer to grab a hit in the first game, singling up the middle in the second. Despite loading up the bases in the frame, CBU couldn't send them home and fell 6-0.
The two top PacWest teams face on again on Saturday for another pair of games, with the first starting at noon.
