HONOLULU, Hawaii – California Baptist University capitalized first, but couldn't hold off Chaminade to settle for a 1-1 double-overtime tie on Monday.
CBU sits at 3-4-3 on the year, 2-1-2 in the PacWest, while Chaminade holds a 2-6-1 overall, 2-3-1 conference record.
"I thought we dominated and played with heart and tenacity," said Coach Kristen St. Clair. "Soccer is a humbling game sometimes, there are elements that we cannot control. Today we had two goals called back and a penalty kick called in the last 12 seconds. Regardless, we continue to focus on our own execution and performance to get better everyday. There are no easy games in this conference, home or away. Now we'll focus on recovery and preparation for BYU-Hawaii on Thursday."
Haley Wheelon got the ball rolling for the Lancers in the fifth minute, forcing the Silversword goalkeeper to make a save to keep the game scoreless.
Neither team could find the back of the net in the first half, despite both teams having chances.
Chaylin Couzens opened the second half with an opportunity in the first minute of the period, but it was just a bit too high.
She got what she was looking for in the 63rd minute. Desarae Felix sent a through ball to the left side, allowing Couzens to run onto it. Couzens dribbled past two defenders to the middle and ripped her shot to the far post to put CBU in front 1-0.
Time couldn't wind down fast enough for the Lancers, however, as a penalty kick was called with just 12 seconds left on the clock. The Silverswords converted the attempt to force overtime, even at 1-1.
Neither team could find the golden goal in the two overtime periods, finalizing the game at 1-1.
The Lancers have two more games left before returning to the Mainland. CBU heads to the North Shore for a final meeting with BYUH on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. PST.
