Went The Otter Way

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — One goal was the difference maker Saturday afternoon, but unfortunately for California Baptist University, it came for the other team.
Cal State Monterey Bay capitalized on a penalty kick in the 23rd minute and held on for the 1-0 win. It drops the Lancers to 0-2-0 on the season, while the Otters improve to 2-0-0.
The Lancer defense was busy from the start, but CBU soon settled in and created chances of its own at the other end of the field. Chaylin Couzens looked like she might find the back of the net in the 19th minute, curving a shot toward the back post, but an Otter blocked the attempt to keep it 0-0.
CSUMB drew the penalty kick after one of its attackers was fouled in the box. Sara Escobedo read the Otter's attempt well, but it was just out of reach to put the visitors in front, 1-0.
Four minutes later the Otters hoped to add some insurance, but Escobedo wasn't having that, as she tipped a high shot over the bar and out of danger.
Coming out of halftime, the Lancers were hungry for an equalizer, but just couldn't put the ball in the goal.
Desarae Felix had the best and ultimately last chance of the game with less than a minute on the clock. She collected a ball about eight yards out and turned to shoot, hitting it just inches too far to the right to knock off the far post.
CBU hosts Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday at 2:00 p.m., hoping to get some redemption from this weekend.
