Seizing Opportunities

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Going into Thursday afternoon's matchup with Cal Poly Pomona, California Baptist University knew to not take the Broncos lightly. They were coming off a tie with the defending NCAA Division II champions, but the Lancers made it look too easy, walking away with a 3-0 win.
"The team has been working really hard in training," said Coach Kristen St. Clair. "We've been creating some really good attacking chances; we've just been a little unlucky finishing in the first two games. It's starting to come together now."
The Lancers improve to 1-2-0 with their first win of the season, while the Broncos have to continue looking for a victory, falling to 0-2-1.
With the way CBU started, three shots in the first five minutes, it was only a matter of time before the Lancers would find the back of the net.
Jordan Dow seized the opportunity in the 13th minute, collecting a goal kick and putting it past the Bronco goalkeeper for her first collegiate goal.
"None of their players were there and I saw the opportunity," said Dow. "I took a touch and shot it."
The Lancers kept pressing, but didn't score until 10 minutes before halftime. Desarae Felix put the pressure on full blast in the 38th minute, taking back-to-back shots on goal before laying off a pass for Justene Kesterson to hammer it home and give the Lancers a 2-0 cushion.
CBU wasn't content just yet, however, as Rebecca Romero netted her first goal of her college career. The CPP goalkeeper came out of her box to challenge Dow for a free ball on the right side of the field, but Dow beat her to it and was able to get a cross off. The wide-open Romero tucked it away on her first touch to put the Lancers into halftime with a comfortable 3-0 lead.
Coming out of the break, the Broncos seemed to have some urgency to get back into the game and forced Sara Escobedo to make save after save after save to keep her team in the game. The junior goalkeeper finished the contest with nine saves to grab her first shutout of the season.
The Lancers head out on the road for the first time, traveling south to Cal State San Marcos for a Saturday 3:00 p.m. kickoff.
