Lancers Rally In Azusa

AZUSA, Calif. — California Baptist University put on its rally caps in both games Tuesday night, but just fell short in a 6-5 extra-inning loss and a 4-2 defeat to Azusa Pacific.
The Lancers move to 8-7 overall, 2-2 in the PacWest with the results. The Cougars sit 10-5 on the year and open conference 2-0.
After finding themselves trailing 3-0 after three innings, the Lancers exploded in the fourth. Soraya Shahbazian led off with a single down the right field line before Hannah Thieroff put two runners in scoring position with a double to left.
Ali Subia drew a rogue pitch to the body to load up the bases, before an illegal pitch plated one run. Two more runs came in on a Cougar error to even the game up 3-3.
APU took back its lead in the bottom half of the inning, however, scoring two runs to jump in front 5-3.
Once again, CBU had another big inning to tie the game, 5-5, in the top of the fifth. Caitlyn Lloyd led the frame off with a solo home run before Brittany Galvez sent Liz Dickson home from second on a base hit to deep right center.
For the third time in one week, the game went into extra innings. Unfortunately for the Lancers, they couldn't grab the overtime victory as APU scored on a walkoff double to take the game 6-5.
CBU tried to bounce back in the nightcap, but once again found itself trailing 3-0.
Shahbazian broke the scoreless streak in the top of the fourth after drawing ball four to start the inning. The Cougars managed to grab two outs, but Shahbazian stole second to put herself in a better scoring position.
It paid off as Shahbazian rounded third and came home on a Galvez single to center, putting CBU within two, 3-1.
The Cougars added some insurance in the bottom of the fifth, putting pressure on the Lancers to score three runs in the top of the seventh to keep the game going. With one out, Alley Johnson came in as a pinch hitter and drilled a triple deep in right field – despite going down 0-2 in the count – to give the visitors some hope.
Johnson then tagged up at third to cut the margin to two runs, 4-2, but with two outs. The Cougars managed to find the final out, however, sealing the 4-2 result.
CBU gets some time off before returning home to host Holy Names next Tuesday for a pair of games starting at 5:00 p.m.
