Double-Double

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — In its fourth game in eight days, No. 4-ranked California Baptist University got back to its shooting ways and grabbed a 101-86 victory over BYU-Hawaii Saturday night.
The Lancers improve to 21-2 overall, 13-2 in the PacWest with the win. The Seasiders fall to 5-15, 3-11 in conference in what may be their last matchup against the Lancers. BYUH is dropping athletics after this season.
Michael Smith led the Lancers with 35 points (14-for-20) and dished out four assists. Big man Kalidou Diouf (11-for-18) chipped in 27 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double, while also finishing with five assists, a block and a steal. Jason Todd also had a double-double, grabbing a career-high 15 rebounds to go with his 13 points on 4-of-8 shooting. Jordan Heading (4-for-8) rounded out the Lancers in double figures with 11 points, while Casey Norris matched his career high assists with seven dimes on the night.
CBU dominated the glass, finishing with 49 boards to the Seasiders' 34 rebounds.
After dropping a loss on Thursday, CBU knew it needed to bounce back in a big way.
The Lancers came out ready to go and opened on a 10-3 run to force a BYUH timeout early. Todd scored the first basket of the night off a pass from Diouf. Norris drew an and-one opportunity during the run and completed the old-fashioned, three-point play with ease to help give CBU the seven-point cushion three minutes into the game.
BYUH kept fighting and pulled within 24-19, before a triple from Todd and back-to-back layups from Diouf and Smith put the Lancers in front by 12 just about halfway through the first. That lead soon turned into a 16-point cushion as CBU started heating up from beyond the arc.
CBU confidently walked into halftime with a 53-41 margin.
Still, the Seasiders didn't let up and cut the upper hand all the way down to just one point, 76-75, with just over eight minutes to play.
The Lancers responded with a 10-2 run, hoping to take back their double-digit lead. Smith sparked the run with an and-one, before Diouf dunked on a counterattack. Heading capped the run with a triple in the corner, 86-77.
BYUH tried to snap the momentum, but the Lancers were feeling it down the stretch, holding an 86-79 lead.
CBU closed out the final five minutes on a 15-7 run to seal the 101-86 victory.
The Lancers head out on the road for four consecutive games before returning home for "One Last Time in Van Dyne" on Feb. 25. CBU hosts Point Loma for another televised game, which potentially is the last basketball game to be played in the Van Dyne Gym with the new CBU Events Center scheduled to open later this spring.
