Going Extra Long

ST. GEORGE, Utah — No. 18-ranked California Baptist University's bats came alive Thursday to beat Western Washington 8-2 and Montana State Billings 11-3 in six innings at the Easton Classic, hosted by Dixie State.
CBU now sits 3-4 on the year, while WWU drops to 5-2 and MSUB sits 2-8.
"Really proud of the girls today," said Coach Bill Baber. "They bounced back well in the second game, despite giving up the lead."
The Lancers knocked eight long balls on the day, with London Miller blasting four home runs total – two in each game. She went 5-for-6, scored four runs, batted in six runs and drew two walks, finishing the day with a 2.833 slugging percentage and .875 on-base percentage.
"London was on fire," said Baber. "She really swung the bat well."
It all started in the first, despite WWU grabbing two outs. Soraya Shahbazian (4-for-8, four runs) started a rally with a base hit through the left side and Miller stepped up to the plate to blast her first home run of the day and put her team up, 2-0.
The Lancers tacked on four more runs in the top of the third as Halle Rosario opened the inning with a solo shot to dead center. Shahbazian followed with another solo home run, sending it over the fence in left.
WWU changed pitchers and managed to find its second out, before Ali Subia doubled to send Miller – who had drawn ball four – home. Hannah Thieroff drove Subia in with a blooper base hit in shallow center to give the Lancers a 6-0 cushion.
CBU threatened to put the run-rule into play in the top of the fifth as Miller drilled another home run, just tucking it inside the left field foul pole, making it 7-0.
The Vikings ended their scoreless streak in the bottom half of the frame, scoring two runs to cut the score to 7-2.
Amanda Springsted all but sealed the victory with another solo home run in the sixth, before the Lancer defense secured the 8-2 win.
Ciara Stapp had a stellar game in the circle, striking out three batters in her second victory of the year.
Miller didn't cool off in the nightcap, putting the Lancers on the board in another two-out rally. With Krista Mann on first, Miller turned on her first pitch and sent it sailing over the wall at left to give CBU an early 2-0 lead.
MSUB managed to even things up in the next half inning with a two-run homer of its own before taking a 3-2 advantage in the top of the third. The Lancer defense wouldn't allow any more, however, as they ran down two Yellowjackets to end the inning.
The Lancers took back the lead in the bottom half of the frame, scoring five runs on four hits. CBU loaded up the bases with one out and Caitlyn Lloyd drew a rogue pitch to the body to advance all the runners. Subia followed with a free ticket to first on ball four, sending another runner home for a 4-3 CBU edge.
Thieroff kept the scoring going with a base hit through the left side and an illegal pitch allowed another Lancer run, 6-3. Brittany Galvez capped the scoring with an RBI single through the gap between third and short to put CBU in front 7-3.
Ashley Coleman kept momentum in CBU's favor by taking the Yellowjackets down in order to put her team back at the plate in the bottom of the fourth.
With Mann and Miller in scoring position at third and second, Lloyd laid down a bunt and Mann safely slid home to make it 8-3 in favor of the Lancers.
CBU just needed three runs to invoke the mercy rule, which all came in the sixth. Shahbazian and Miller knocked back-to-back home runs to inch the Lancers closer to the eight-run margin. Lloyd doubled and then was joined on base by Subia off a base hit. Deanna Alarcon ended the game early by laying down a suicide squeeze bunt and Lloyd beat the tag to give CBU the 11-3 victory.
The Lancers look to build on today's momentum, taking on Metro State at 11:30 a.m. (PT) and Colorado Mesa at 4:30 p.m. (PT) on Friday.
