ALAMEDA, Calif. – California Baptist University erupted for five runs in the eighth inning in Saturday's PacWest series finale against Holy Names at the College of Alameda.
It was close but just not enough for the Lancers, as the Hawks pulled out the 7-5 victory. CBU ends the week with a 24-14 overall record, 15-9 in conference and HNU improves to 10-27, 7-17.
There is a big test for the Lancers next week, as they face conference-rival Azusa Pacific in an away-home set. The Cougars host the first two games Thursday and Friday at 5 p.m. and APU comes to Riverside for a series-ending doubleheader Saturday at noon.
Nick Plaia (2-for-2), Tyler Johnson (2-for-4) and John Glenn (2-for-5) all collected two hits on Saturday for the Lancers.
After being held in check and trailing HNU 6-0 after the first seven innings, CBU started the eighth with a single and two doubles from Bryce Macy, Ryan Williams and Glenn, respectively. Glenn's double was good for two runs, while he moved up to third on a fly out to right field.
With one out, DJ Porter drew a walk and Brian Ruhm drove in Glenn with a single through the right side. Plaia doubled home Porter and then a grounder to shortstop plated Ruhm.
It cut the Lancers' deficit to one, 6-5, but Holy Names added an insurance run in the eighth and held on for the 7-5 victory.
