Soaring Over the Eagles

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – No 20-ranked California Baptist University kept momentum rolling Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep in dominant fashion, shutting out Concordia University of Irvine 4-0 and 8-0 (five innings).
It extends the Lancers' winning streak to 20-straight games, setting a new program-best unbeaten streak in the NCAA era. The wins put CBU at 28-7 overall and still in first place with a 20-2 mark in the PacWest. The Eagles drop to 27-12-2 on the year, 13-7 in conference with the losses.
CBU got things rolling early, striking first in the bottom of the first inning. With two runners on and one out, London Miller made solid contact with the ball, drilling it to the gap at right center to send Caitlyn Lloyd (fielder's choice) and Soraya Shahbazian (walk) in.
The Eagles looked to respond in the top of the second, putting a runner on first, but Shahbazian made a clutch diving catch in center and hurled it over to Erin Burkhart to catch the runner off the bag.
In the bottom half of the inning, CBU carried that momentum over and added another run. Deanna Alarcon led the frame off by drawing ball four and Lloyd drove her home with a double to right center, 3-0.
Shahbazian all but put the game away after she tucked a home run just inside the left foul pole, pushing the Lancers lead to 4-0.
Kellye Springstead was the anchor behind the Lancers dominate shutout performance. The sophomore pitcher struck out eight batters and didn't allow the Eagles to get much flow behind the bat, securing her ninth win of the season.
CBU kept the pressure on Concordia in the second game of their doubleheader, capitalizing off of the Eagles early on mistakes. Krista Mann opened up the first inning with a too-hard-to-handle single to the pitcher. Lloyd joined her on base with an error and the pair moved to scoring position at third and second. CUI grabbed an out, but another CUI error allowed Mann and Lloyd to score, 2-0.
Brittany Galvez kept the scoring coming with an RBI double to left center field, allowing Miller to score and give the Lancers a 3-0 cushion.
The Lancer defense held strong before CBU's bat stole the show in the bottom of the third, taking total control of the game with a balanced attack.
Galvez led the inning off with a walk, but the Eagles managed to grab a putout in the next play. Ali Subia drew a rogue ball to the body and Amanda Springstead singled through the left side to load the bases. The Eagles hurt themselves with another throwing error, allowing the Lancers to bring home Galvez and Subia, 5-0.
Unfortunately for the Eagles, the scoring spree didn't stop there as CBU plated three more runs before Concordia could record the third out. Mann laid down a perfect bunt as Amanda Springstead came sprinting in to safely tag home. Lloyd followed with an RBI single of her own, before Shahbazian singled through the left side to load the bases once more.
Concordia switched pitchers, but Miller sacrificed a fly ball to center to give Mann the green light to tag up at third and give the Lancers the staggering 8-0 lead.
Freshmen pitcher Ciara Stapp kept the runs off the board to end the game early due to the mercy rule and earned her 11th win of the season, throwing three strikeouts, only giving up two hits in five innings.
The Lancers are back in action on Monday, hosting Notre Dame De Namur for a pair of games, beginning at 5 p.m.
