IRVINE, Calif. – Two home runs led California Baptist University to a game two win and doubleheader split with Concordia University of Irvine on Tuesday afternoon at Eagles Field.
CUI won the first game Tuesday, 7-6, but the 20th-ranked Lancers stormed back with a 5-0 shutout victory in the final contest of the day. With one game left in the regular season, CBU improved to a 33-16 overall record, 24-11 in the PacWest and CUI dropped to 22-27, 18-17. CBU and the Eagles wrap up the series Wednesday at 3 p.m.
For the second start in a row, Andrew Bash threw a complete game in CBU's win Tuesday, notching the seven-inning shutout in the process. The freshman allowed six hits and struck out three to earn the win.
In Tuesday's finale, the Lancers scored first on a Tommy Bell walk, John Glenn double and sacrifice fly from Brian Ruhm in the second inning.
CBU added to its lead in the third, starting with a one-out double from Luke Navigato and walk to Ryan Williams. Bell hit a three-run homer to put CBU up 4-0. Alfredo Rodriguez capped the scoring with a solo homer in the fourth.
In the opener, CBU came out and scored the first five runs of the game. Bryce Macy started the scoring with a solo homer in the top of the first and consecutive walks to Bell and Glenn continued a two-out rally for the Lancers.
DJ Porter hit a ground-rule double to score Bell, and Navigato drove in both Porter and Glenn with a single into right field to give CBU a 4-0 lead.
Bash drew a leadoff walk in the second, and Nick Plaia mounted pressure with a single into left field right after. Both runners tagged up on a fly ball to center field, and Bash then scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-0.
Concordia came back and tied the game 5-5, with two runs in the second and three more in the third. The Eagles then took their first lead, 6-5, with a run in the seventh.
Consecutive singles from Glenn and Porter started the eighth for CBU. A sacrifice bunt moved both into scoring position, and Tyler Johnson tied the game with a pinch-hit single up the middle.
CUI recorded the final two outs of the inning to keep the game even, and then got a leadoff double in the bottom in the ninth. Two-straight bunts led to the Eagles scoring the winning run on a suicide-squeeze play.
