Responding in a Big Way

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — After dropping a close 3-2 loss, California Baptist University exploded on offense in the nightcap to grab an 8-0 win in six innings.
Both the Lancers – who were battling some injuries and illnesses – and the Cougars open the season 1-1 after splitting on the day.
"I thought we came out a little rusty, and played a little bit too tentatively," said Coach Bill Baber. "We got more aggressive in the second game. We just need to keep focusing on playing aggressive ball."
Halle Rosario (5-for-8) and Cheyann Tucker (3-for-5) had solid days for the Lancers, finishing with .600 and .625 respective batting averages on the day. Caitlyn Lloyd also had multiple hits on the day (3-for-7).
After a scoreless draw for the first four innings of the opener, CSUSM took a 2-0 lead with a two-run homer in the top of the fifth.
CBU responded in the second half of the frame, however, as Tucker led off with a blooper single just over the first baseman's head. Diana Gomez took over running for her and was joined on base by Shaye Felix. Ali Subia sacrificed a bunt to move the runners up and Hannah Thieroff came in in a pinch and singled to left to score Gomez, 2-1
The Lancers tied things up in the bottom of the sixth as Tucker blasted a base hit to right center, scoring Rosario – who had singled down the right-field line – from third, 2-2.
"When someone finally gets a hit, everyone starts hitting," said Baber. "They made a couple defensive plays that kept us from scoring more, but we got that momentum going; couple mental mistakes let it slip away."
Despite momentum building for CBU, Cal State San Marcos scored in the top of the seventh and held on for the 3-2 victory.
The Lancers wasted no time at all in the nightcap as Lloyd got it going with a leadoff homer in the bottom of the first.
"We did a good job focusing back in and not letting the first game bother us," said Baber. "The team did a good job getting behind Iveth [Alvarado]. We came back strong, a leadoff home run always gets things going. It gets contagious."
CBU's defense kept a tight lid on the Cougars, allowing Anise Avalos to tuck a solo shot of her own inside the left-field post to put the Lancers up 2-0 after two complete.
Things didn't slow down from there as a fielder's choice in the fourth allowed Amanda Springstead to score and a sacrifice fly from Tucker upped CBU's lead to 4-0.
"Anise had a couple good hits," said Baber of his newcomers stepping up. "Cheyann was phenomenal catching both games despite not feeling well. She was a warrior out there and did a fantastic job."
In the fifth, Avalos took advantage of a defensive error to get on base and advanced to second in the process. She scored on a Springstead single before the Cougars could even get an out. Back in as a pinch runner, Gomez scored from second off a Rosario double to extend the Lancers' lead to 6-0 and threaten the run-rule coming into play.
It came in the sixth, as the Lancers loaded up the bases with two outs. Rosario stepped up to the plate and drilled a single up the middle, allowing two runners to come home and hand CBU the 8-0 victory.
"Halle really had quite a second game," said Baber. "She made her adjustments and hit the ball well. When we get her going, there's no telling what she can do."
In the circle, Iveth Alvarado picked up the win, throwing four scoreless innings. Kellye Springstead came in and pitched two shutout innings of relief.
The Lancers head out to St. George, Utah, for the Dixie State Tournament next week. CBU first takes on Colorado-Colorado Springs on Feb. 8 at 9:00 a.m. Pacific.
"Nice to finally get a game out there," said Baber. "We learned what we need to do to be successful to help us go into the next six games on the road. Hopefully we'll get healthy."
