Gomez Goes For It

ST. GEORGE, Utah – California Baptist University caught fire in the first game of the Dixie State Easton Classic Thursday morning and didn't cool off. The Lancers beat UC Colorado Springs 10-1 and Fort Lewis 4-3 with big performances at the plate from multiple players.
With the wins, CBU improves to 3-1 on the year. The Mountain Lions drop to 2-3, while the Skyhawks fall to 0-6 on the year.
Diana Gomez — who was thrown into the starting lineup after an unexpected injury — was a standout at the plate, going 5-for-5 on the day with three RBIs and one run scored.
Hannah Thieroff got the scoring going on the day by sacrificing a fly ball in the top of the first to score Halle Rosario, who had walked aboard. Anise Avalos doubled the lead in the second, blasting a solo home run over the fence in center, 2-0.
The Lancer defense came out strong and took down the Mountain Lions in order in the bottom of the first and second to keep UCCS scoreless.
It kept momentum in favor of CBU as the Lancers scored four runs in the top of the third to up their lead to 6-0. Cheyann Tucker, Theiroff and Shaye Felix opened the inning with back-to-back-to-back singles, loading up the bases with no outs. Two fielder's choices scored two runners, before Gomez laced one up the middle to drive home two more runs.
UCCS managed to limit the damage and hold off CBU in the fourth, fifth and sixth to prevent a mercy rule, while breaking its shutout in the bottom of the fifth, 6-1.
The Lancers wouldn't go away quietly, however, as they scored four runs on six hits in the seventh. Amanda Springstead led off with a single to center and was joined on base by Gomez (single up the middle), who proceeded to steal second. A sacrifice fly from Caitlyn Lloyd deep into right center allowed both runners to score, before Rosario doubled on her first pitch.
Tucker drove Rosario in with a single through the 5-6 gap and came home on an Ali Subia base hit up the middle, 10-1.
After CBU grabbed two outs to open the bottom half of the inning, UCCS managed to get a hit to keep some hope alive. It didn't last long, however, as Ciara Stapp drew a fly ball to right, where Springstead got under it to end the game, 10-1.
In the nightcap, Fort Lewis struck first with a run in the top of the first, but the Lancers responded back right away. After Rosario stole second, Thieroff traded places with her with a double down the left field line to even the game up 1-1.
CBU took its first lead of the game, 3-1, in the bottom of the second when Avalos blasted her second home run of the day with Subia on base.
The two-run lead didn't last, however, as the Skyhawks tied the game in the fourth, 3-3.
CBU grabbed its lead back in the bottom of the sixth as Subia sparked a one-out rally with a single through the right side gap. Avalos (single) and Springstead (walk) loaded up the bases, allowing Gomez to send in the eventual game-winner with a solid single through the left side, despite going down in the count.
Fort Lewis got some hope in the top of the seventh after the Skyhawks managed to put runners on the corners with two outs. Kellye Springstead kept her cool in the circle, inducing a fly ball toward right, where her sister Amanda ended the game with a diving catch in foul territory.
The Lancers continue action at the Easton Classic with two games tomorrow, taking on Western Washington first at 9 a.m. Pacific.
