Battling out in Utah

ST. GEORGE, Utah — Despite a depleted lineup – dealing with injuries and illnesses – California Baptist University battled in the second day of the Easton Classic, hosted by Dixie State.
The Lancers, who were missing three starters, dropped the first game of the day 9-1 to Western Washington, but bounced back with a 3-0 victory over Chadron State.
With the split, CBU sits 4-2 on the young year. The Vikings improve to 1-7 and the Eagles slip to 2-7.
Caitlyn Lloyd scored the lone run in the opener with a leadoff home run, but the Vikings took the game 9-1.
CBU bounced back in the second game, keeping the Eagles scoreless with Ciara Stapp picking up her second win of the year. She threw seven complete innings, allowing just two hits in 23 at-bats and striking out three batters.
After two shutout innings, including a double play by the Lancers, CBU struck in the top of the third when Diana Gomez led off with a walk. A wild pitch advanced Gomez to second before she rounded third after back-to-back errors to put the Lancers up 1-0.
Stapp struck out two batters in the bottom half of the inning to keep momentum in favor of CBU.
Shaye Felix led off the fourth with a hard-hit infield single before Ali Subia blasted a home run over the fence just left of center, 3-0.
Both defenses locked down, not allowing any more scoring for the rest of the game. Chadron State threatened in the bottom of the fifth, but the Lancers turned their second double play of the game to keep their shutout intact.
The Lancers close out the Easton Classic tomorrow, taking on Metro State bright and early at 9 a.m. and No. 8-ranked Colorado Mesa at 2 p.m., both times Pacific.
