The Lancers improve to 13-3 on the year, 6-0 PacWest with the series sweep, remaining undefeated to Dominican in the NCAA era. The Penguins drop to 6-14 overall and 2-6 in conference.
While yesterday it may have taken a couple innings to get the Lancers' bats hot, CBU didn't waste time Tuesday night. Caitlyn Lloyd opened the bottom of the first with a base hit to right field, before making her way to third as the outfielder couldn't field the ball cleanly. Soraya Shahbazian tucked a hard-hit grounder through the gap between third and short for a single, allowing Lloyd to score the first of many runs, 1-0.
Hannah Thieroff drove Shahbazian home with a double down the left-field line, before coming home on an Ali Subia home run in right center, 4-0. Manoa Wiejgertse kept the streak going with a base hit up the middle and was joined on base after a Halle Rosario single. Anise Avalos drilled a home run over the fence at dead center, increasing CBU's lead to seven runs.
Amanda Springstead singled aboard and Lloyd got a free ticket in her second chance to bat in the inning. The Penguins managed to get the second out of the inning, but Shahbazian made it 10-0 with the third home run of the inning.
Dominican managed to put some runs on the board in the top of the second, 10-2, but Rosario sacrificed a fly ball deep in right field to send Subia, who tagged up at third, home, 11-2. The Penguins kept battling and cut the margin to five runs, 11-6, in the top of the fourth.
CBU held on for the 11-6 victory as Iveth Alvarado pitched three effective innings for the save.
In the nightcap, Thieroff kept the home runs coming and put CBU on the board in the first inning with a two-run shot, 2-0.
Kellye Springstead continued her dominant play in the circle, striking out three-straight batters in the top of the second. She finished with six strikeouts in her sixth win of the year.
Wiejgertse led the bottom half of the frame off with a triple to right and came home on an RBI single from Rosario. The second baseman then came home on a wild pitch, before Avalos tagged up on a sacrifice fly to make it 5-0.
CBU added some insurance in the third as Rosario blasted a no-doubter over the fence in left, scoring three runs in the process, 8-0. Shaye Felix stepped up in a two-out, pinch-hit situation and, despite going down 0-2 in the count, made solid contact for an RBI double to send Lloyd (four-ball walk) home from first, 9-0.
The Lancer defense took down the Penguins in order in the top of the fourth and put some more pressure on the visitors to avoid the run rule coming into play with three more runs in the bottom. With two outs and runners on first and second, Amanda Springstead knocked a home run over the fence at center field to cap the scoring, 12-0.
Three putouts from Thieroff, Lloyd and Shahbazian sealed the 12-0 mercy rule victory in the top of the fifth.
CBU continues its 10-game homestand with another PacWest doubleheader Thursday, hosting Holy Names at 5:00 p.m.
