IRVINE, Calif. — In its last road trip of the regular season, No. 12-ranked California Baptist University dropped 7-0 and 2-0 losses to Concordia University of Irvine.
The Lancers drop to 31-10 overall, 23-7 in the PacWest. The Eagles move to 40-12, 22-6 in conference to take over first place in the conference.
Brittany Galvez (2-for-4) and Caitlyn Lloyd (3-for-6) each had multiple hits on the day. Shaye Felix, Soraya Shahbazian and Halle Rosario also knocked a base hit for CBU.
An uncharacteristic first inning with multiple errors put CBU in a 5-0 hole in the opener and the Lancers just couldn't get out of it, dropping the first game 7-0.
In the nightcap, CBU put runners on in its first chance at the plate. Lloyd led off with an infield single before an error put runners at second and first. Shahbazian sacrificed a bunt to advance the runners, but Concordia got the next two outs to get out of the inning unscathed.
The Eagles managed to score two runs in the second, but the Lancers never gave up.
With two outs in the third, Galvez singled to left field, but was left stranded. CBU had one of its best chance at scoring runs in the fifth after Amanda Springstead drew a two-out walk and Lloyd doubled to left field. Once again, however, the Eagles got out of the jam to hold onto their 2-0 lead.
The Lancers looked like they might break through in the sixth, loading up the bases with two outs. Shahbazian led the inning off with a single to left and Hannah Thieroff drew four-straight balls for a free ticket to first.
CUI grabbed the next two outs, before Felix found a gap between second base and shortstop to load the bases. The Eagle defense wouldn't let go of their shutout, however, and grabbed the third out to end the inning.
Still, with two outs in the top of the seventh, the Lancers had fight. Galvez made contact with a pitch, putting it on the ground toward shortstop. She turned on the jets and beat out the throw for a base hit, but unfortunately wouldn't come home as the Eagles took the game 2-0.
CBU closes out the regular season next week, hosting Academy of Art on Thursday, May 3, for a pair of games beginning at 5:00 p.m.
