LOS ANGELES – Throughout the Golden Coast Conference season, California Baptist University has shown it can play with any of its seven conference opponents. The Lancers will look to prove that once again when it matters most this weekend at the GCC Championships.
Loyola Marymount will host the conference tournament, which opens Friday and goes through Sunday. CBU enters ranked 22nd in NCAA (Divisions I-III) and seeded sixth for the tournament after it finished the regular season tied for fourth in the conference standings with Azusa Pacific and Fresno State, but slipped to sixth based on conference-tiebreaker protocol.
The Lancers open the GCC Championships against 20th-ranked and third-seeded San Diego State on Friday at 9:15 a.m. Friday's winner will advance to the conference semifinals to face the victor of Friday's second and seven-seed game between Loyola Marymount and Santa Clara at 12:45 p.m. Saturday, with the losers playing at 9:15 a.m.
Live stats through theFOSH and live stream through YouTube live will be available for every game of the tournament.
Both CBU and SDSU battled through a defensive, one-goal game, with the Aztecs escaping with a 3-2 win in their home pool. SDSU scored the first three goals of the game, but the Lancers rallied back and scored twice in the fourth quarter.
It was the fewest amount of goals the program has ever given up to a ranked team in the NCAA (Divisions I-III) and was also tied for the lowest-scoring game in CBU history. It only happened one other time when CBU defeated Harvard, 3-2, on March 30, 2005.
San Diego State is led by Hannah Carrillo, a junior driver; Emily Bennett, a freshman utility and junior goalie Maura Cantoni. All three earned All-GCC awards earlier this week. Both Bennett and Carrillo are the team's top offensive threats, as Bennett leads the Aztecs with 42 goals, 55 drawn ejections, 58 steals and 14 assists. Carrillo has 40 goals, 32 steals and 15 assists. Cantoni has 203 saves and a 7.92 goals-against average.
It could very well be another defensive game on Friday. Defense has been CBU's strength all season long, as it has held opponents, including 18 top-25, seven top-10 and three top-five ranked teams, to 8.97 goals a game. The Lancers have only been stingier of late, allowing an average of 4.75 goals over the last four games.
Three Lancers: Kira O'Donell, Lizette Perez and Grace Ramirez earned All-GCC honors on Tuesday and will be key for their team, along with several other standouts. Ramirez leads CBU's defensive effort in the cage with 228 saves and 52 steals this season. The Lancers have several ball hawks in the field, as well, with Annie Eubanks leading the team with 59 steals, while Allie Coleman (46) and Lizette Perez (40) each have at least 40 steals, too.
Offensively, O'Donell leads CBU with 81 points and 51 goals, along with 30 assists, as a true freshman. The attacker also has 29 drawn ejections and 17 steals this year. Perez, Eubanks and Coleman give the Lancers a deadly quartet on offense, with each notching at least 59 points to this part of the season.
Perez earned All-GCC first-team honors on Tuesday, while Ramirez was an honorable mention and O'Donell was the conference Newcomer of the Year, a second-teamer and All-Freshman Team member. Perez, a junior driver, has 73 points with a team-high 36 assists and 37 goals, 54 drawn ejections and a team-high 14 field blocks.
Eubanks, Coleman, Jaclyn Myers, Jocelyn Schwegler and Amy Bideshi have been key seniors and leaders for the Lancers. Eubanks has been a do-everything player for CBU, with 65 points (35 assists, 30 goals), a team-high 60 drawn ejections and 33 sprints won and Coleman has logged 59 points (34 assists, 25 goals). Schwegler and Myers are big for CBU's defense as the primary two-meter defenders and have also combined for 40 points this season.
