Lancers Stun Fresno State, 8-0

Not only that, it was over in just five innings as the Lancers downed the Bulldogs, who were picked to finish second in the Mountain West Conference preseason poll, on an 8-0 final score. It was all done in front of a standing-room only crowd at John C. Funk Stadium.
Fresno State is one of the more storied softball programs in the country. The Bulldogs have won 23 conference championships, qualified for the NCAA Tournament 33 times, made 12 Women's College World Series appearances, reached the championship game five times and won the national title in 1998.
Brittany Galvez and Mackenzie Budinger helped power the Lancers to victory offensively, while Kellye Springstead allowed just one hit and two walks over five innings in the circle.
Galvez and Budinger combined for five of CBU's 10 hits and each had three runs batted in. Galvez hit two home runs, while Budinger had a three-run bomb of her own. Cheyann Tucker and Ashley McBay both had two hits as well for the Lancers.
"This means a lot to us," Galvez said. "It's nice to be here at home and win for our family, friends, the team and the university. This was something special. This was really a nice win."
After a scoreless top of the first, CBU scored all eight of its runs in the first three innings. Galvez energized the home crowd when she hit a solo home run on the first pitch to a Lancer in Funk Stadium in 2019.
"To start the way we did with that home run feels pretty good," Coach Bill Baber said. "I know the players are really happy right now. We have to play this way all the time. We talk all the time about not getting too high after a win or too low after a loss."

CBU built on the momentum, as an error set the table for two more runs to score after singles from Budinger, Halle Rosario (RBI) and Tucker (RBI), to give the Lancers a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first.

In the second inning, Ashley McBay led things off with a single. The Bulldogs retired the next two batters before a walk to Caitlyn Lloyd kept the inning alive. Budinger then hit a three-run homer to double CBU's lead, 6-0.
She hit that real hard.

Another two-out rally led to two more CBU runs to in the third. McBay started the threat with a single and stolen base before Galvez scored them both with her second home run of the game to left center.
Although she made it look easy, Galvez wasn't swinging for the fences and says she never does.
"I am never going for a home run, I've never really been a home-run hitter – line drives and hard on the ground is more my thing," Galvez said. "I was just trying to hit it somewhere hard and get the team going."

The Bulldogs put a runner in scoring position in the first, third and fifth innings, but Springstead came up with a big pitch each time. After giving up a hit and a walk in the first inning, the senior pitcher gave up just one walk the rest of the way and overcame an error in the fifth.
"[Springstead] came out fantastic and threw the game she knows how," Baber said. "She knows how good of a pitcher she is and so do we. She really did a great job out there, she was just masterful and there was a great defense behind her."
