Rosario, Avalos Shine in Tournament Opener

STOCKTON, Calif. – Impressive days from Halle Rosario and Anise Avalos were just not enough, as California Baptist University suffered a pair of close losses to start the Libby Matson Tournament on Friday.
The Lancers opened the day with a 6-2 loss to Nevada, and then just came up short in a 1-0 loss to host Pacific in the evening. Rosario went 3-for-4 at the plate over both games, while Avalos finished the day 3-for-6 in a 6-2 loss to Nevada and 1-0 defeat to host Pacific on Friday. Nevada improves to 5-5 on the year and Pacific improves to 3-7.
Nevada took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but solo home runs from Rosario and Avalos in the top of the second tied the game. The Wolfpack took the lead again with a run in the bottom half, and then capped its scoring with a three-run sixth.
Rosario and Avalos both went 2-for-3 in the game, while Mackenzie Budinger and Shelby Arbeiter each had base hits against a Wolfpack team that has qualified for the National Invitational Softball Championship the last two years and took third in the Mountain West Conference in 2016.
Pacific scored the one and only run in the bottom of the third to spoil an otherwise terrific game from Giana Lopez in the circle. Lopez limited the Tigers to six base runners (four hits, two walks) and also struck out three over her six-inning complete game.
Avalos, Rosario, Arbeiter and Budinger all had hits in the game, as did Caitlyn Lloyd, Deanna Alarcon and Ashley McBay.
Arbeiter started the seventh inning with a single to center, and the Lancers put Sophia Perea, who pinch ran, into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from Alarcon. Perea moved up to third on a passed ball but was left standing there after a game-ending strikeout from Pacific.
CBU will play three more games in the Libby Matson Tournament, next taking on Nevada and Oregon State on Saturday at 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. The Lancers get a rematch with Pacific Sunday at 12:15 p.m. to end the weekend.
