COLLEGE STATION, Texas – California Baptist University started its NCAA Division I transition with a lot of excitement at Texas A&M's Aggie Classic on Friday.

The Lancers' season opener with North Texas wound up being a 12-inning thriller before they faced 20^th-ranked Texas A&M a few hours later. CBU came up short in both games, falling to North Texas 8-7 -- after it rallied with a five-run seventh inning -- and to the Aggies 9-1.

Kellye Springstead went all 11.1 innings in the circle in Friday's opener and struck out 12 batters in the complete-game effort. Brittany Galvez led the Lancers' offense on the day by going 3-for-9 with a double and three runs scored.

CBU's weekend at the Aggie Classic continues with a doubleheader on Saturday. The Lancers will face Northern Colorado at 8 a.m. PDT and then get a rematch with North Texas at 3:15 p.m. Opening week will end against No. 20 Texas A&M Sunday at 10:15 a.m.

It did not take long for the Lancers to score in D-I, scoring in the top of the first against North Texas. Galvez led off the game with a single and came around to score on an error.

North Texas plated five runs in the fourth to go in front and looked to end the game without any drama, but the Lancers were not having any of it and tied the game with four runs in the seventh.

A double from Anise Avalos and single from Shelby Arbeiter put runners on the corners with one out for CBU. A pinch-hit single from Sophia Perea scored Avalos and another single from Galvez loaded the bases. An error cleared the bases and tied the game at 5-5 to force extra innings.

The Lancers took a 6-5 lead in the 10^th with the help of a Caitlyn Lloyd single, a passed ball and an error, but North Texas answered with a run of its own in the bottom half to even the score. Both teams scored again in the 11^th. True freshman Makenna Stram came up with a big RBI single for CBU, but North Texas responded again and then scored in the 12^th to secure the 8-7 win.

CBU scored right away again versus Texas A&M. Galvez doubled to start the game and then scored on an error. The Aggies would score the next nine runs to end the game in five innings.
