Lancers Walk-Off for First D-I Win

COLLEGE STATION, Texas. – California Baptist University earned its first win as a Division I program on day two of the Aggie Classic on Saturday.
The Lancers' opened the day with a 6-1 loss to Northern Colorado before taking a 6-5 victory over North Texas in a game that once again saw CBU and North Texas going to extra innings.
Kellye Springstead went eight innings in the circle on Saturday, claiming the win in the nightcap after coming on in relief in the sixth inning, and striking out nine on the day. Caitlyn Lloyd led the Lancers' offense on the day by going 3-for-4 with an RBI.
CBU wraps up the Aggie Classic and opening weekend on Sunday with one game against the hosting Texas A&M Aggies at 10:15 a.m. PDT, streaming on the SEC Network +.
Big innings, coupled with an inability to string hits together, proved to be the downfall for CBU on Saturday in game one against Northern Colorado.
Northern Colorado tacked three runs on the Lancers in the second and fifth innings.
The Lancers lone run came in the fifth inning off of a Lloyd single to center field that drove in Brittany Galvez.
In game two, CBU faced adversity early on as North Texas loaded the bases on Giana Lopez in the top of the first. The defense backed Lopez well, getting force outs at home plate on the next two batters before the threat was ended on a ground out to strand three North Texas runners on base without a runner crossing the plate.
In the bottom half of the first, the Lancers plated one run on an error at second base. CBU again tacked on a run in the bottom of the second when Alyssa Beck scored on a North Texas error on a double-play attempt.
The Lancers doubled their lead in the third inning on a two-RBI triple for Beck that drove in Molly Kolander and Halle Rosario.
North Texas would tie things up with two run innings in the fifth and the sixth, but the Lancers fought back with a run of their own on an RBI double by Shelby Arbeiter to take a one run lead into the seventh inning. North Texas would knot things up at five in the seventh on an RBI triple before a quick 1-2-3 bottom half sent the game to extra innings.
In the bottom of the ninth, Deanna Alarcon scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch to give CBU its first D-I win.
