FRESNO, Calif. – California Baptist University got payback on UC Santa Barbara to win its third-straight game and put the finishing touches on its most productive week of the season at the Fresno State Tournament on Sunday.
A complete-game win from Kellye Springstead and two-hit performances from Brittany Galvez and Anise Avalos led CBU to a 5-1 win over the Gauchos to start Sunday. The Lancers made a strong comeback bid in a rematch with Fresno State but came up just short in a 6-4 loss to a storied Bulldogs program.
CBU went 4-2 in Fresno this week to improve to 8-13 this season. Fresno State improved to 13-6 and UC Santa Barbara dropped to 5-15. The Lancers return home for a doubleheader with Southern Utah on Wednesday starting at 2:30 p.m. at Funk Stadium.
UCSB won the first meeting with CBU on Friday, 7-5, in the Fresno State Tournament. CBU struck first on Sunday, though, with two runs in the third. It all started when Galvez was hit by a pitch with one out. The Lancers put two runners in scoring position after a Deanna Alarcon single and sacrifice bunt from Halle Rosario. A throwing error at third base allowed both runners to come home.
CBU went ahead 3-0 in the fourth. Singles from Avalos and Alley Johnson, along with an error on a sacrifice bunt from Amanda Argomaniz loaded the bases with one out, and a passed ball plated Avalos.
A two-run homer from Avalos gave CBU a 5-0 advantage. UC Santa Barbara hit a solo homer for its one run in the sixth, but that was it for the Gauchos. Springstead scattered 10 hits and a walk, while striking out seven in the complete-game effort.
The Lancers defeated Fresno State in five innings, 8-0, the first time they met on Feb. 18th. The Bulldogs have won 23 conference championships, qualified for the NCAA Tournament 33 times, made 12 Women's College World Series appearances, reached the championship game five times and won the national title in 1998.
Fresno State took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the third on Sunday. A leadoff homer from Mackenzie Budinger in the fourth cut into the lead, and the Lancers tied the game at 4-4 when Halle Rosario hit a three-run homer in the fifth. Ashley McBay and Makenna Stram set the table for Rosario with a walk and single, respectively.
The Bulldogs responded with a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth and held on the 6-4 win.
