It was a split doubleheader, as the Coyotes just managed to hold off a rally from the Lancers in the bottom of the seventh to open the day to secure a 2-0 win of their own. CBU sought redemption in a back-and-forth game two Tuesday.
"We have been so close in every game this year," Coach Bill Baber said. "We talked in between games today, and we told them to keep fighting, it's going to happen. They kept fighting and didn't worry about that first game, they kept swinging the bat and got some big home runs."
Anise Avalos and Mackenzie Budinger homered, along with Rosario, to push the Lancers past South Dakota. There were three ties and five lead changes in the game. The Lancers are now 4-11 and South Dakota 14-8. CBU is back on the road for six games at the Fresno State Tournament this weekend, opening play against North Dakota and UC Santa Barbara Friday at 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
"It was a great win, it feels great to get that W," Rosario said.
A four-run sixth inning put South Dakota in front, 6-5, going into the seventh. Alley Johnson started the inning off with first-pitch single to shortstop. Brittany Galvez sacrificed her into scoring position before the Coyotes got out No. 2 on a popup to third base.
It all came down to Rosario, with two outs and the tying run in scoring position. Rosario came out first-pitch swinging and lined the ball well over the fence in left center field for the walk-off, one-run victory.
"Halle really got a hold of it," Baber said. "Alley came in and got a big base hit to get us going, that was phenomenal. It gave Halle a chance to hit the ball out. Halle has been a rock all year for us."
Rosario finished the game batting 3-for-4 with three runs batted in. Budinger went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Avalos scored twice in the game.
"In that situation, you just want to see ball, hit ball. You just have to stay smooth, relax, don't worry about the situation too much and just do your thing," Rosario said of her big at-bat. "I didn't know it was gone off the bat, I was just hoping to get to first base. I had no idea it was gone."
Avalos hit a one-out, solo home run in the bottom of the first to give CBU a 1-0 lead.

South Dakota tied the score in the third and then went up 2-1 in the fourth. Budinger's solo home run then tied the game again in the fourth before a three-run outburst from in the fifth made it a 5-2 Lancer lead.

A two-out error opened the door for CBU in the bottom of the fifth. A two-out double from Galvez scored Johnson, who reached on an error and stole second.

Rosario and Budinger then came through with an RBI single and double, respectively, to give their team a three-run lead.

CBU's offense created a number of opportunities in Tuesday's opener but the Lancers were one big hit away from blowing the game open. The Lancers out hit the Coyotes 7-5 but left 11 runners on base, including the bases loaded in the first and third innings.
Galvez went 2-for-3 in the game and sparked a seventh-inning rally attempt, with a leadoff single. South Dakota turned a double play on the next batter, but the Lancers did not give up.
A Rosario single and an error at shortstop brought the winning run to the plate, but the Coyotes danced out of danger with a grounder to third.
