Lancers Overpower Mustangs

RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Precision was the name of the game for California Baptist University on Sunday, as the Lancers overpowered the Mustangs of Cal Poly, 4-2.
With the win, the Lancers improve to 6-2-1 on the season, while the Mustangs fall to 2-7-1. The win also keeps the streak alive, as the Lancers have now won three in a row since starting their homestand back on Sept. 13. Cal Poly came into the game with one of their wins over No. 22 Pepperdine earlier in the season. Pepperdine is the only team this season to beat No. 3 Stanford back on Sept. 13 in Malibu.
"Cal Poly is another team that is far better than its record indicates with an earlier win over a top-25 team," said head coach Kristen St. Clair. "Offensively, I thought we did very well generating numerous scoring opportunities. I was impressed with the scoring efficiency, 10 shots with eight shots on frame, and scoring four goals is a solid performance. Defensively, I thought we were a little flat and inconsistent in areas that are typically our strengths after we score the first goal. That being said, the team defensive work was better in the second half, and we showed gritty determination to close out the game."
The attack was on early, as Amy Aquino wasted no time welcoming the Mustangs to Lancer Field. Aquino gained possession and fired a shot outside the 18 that nearly missed the crossbar by a hair.

CBU would fire off three more shots in the first 12 minutes of the game, keeping the Mustangs on their toes.
Valerie Cortez applied some pressure in the eighth minute, moving the ball to her right foot and forcing Cal Poly's keeper to punch the ball over the net.

It didn't take long for the Lancers to turn these chances into opportunities, though, as Rola Badawiya put a shot on target that was deflected to the right side of the net. Jordan Dow came flying into the box and buried the ball at the 12th minute to put the Lancers on top, 1-0.

The Lancers' lead wouldn't hold for too long, as the Mustangs seized control of possession and made their way down the field. Camille Lafaix found Nikki Trucco moments later, as Cal Poly evened up the score three minutes after the Dow goal.
CBU wasted no time getting back on top, as Amy Aquino gathered a ball off a counter and forced her defender to take a step towards her. Once the defender moved, Aquino crossed the ball to a wide-open Badawiya, who used her left foot to find the back of the net in the 18th minute.

The Lancers went into the break with a 2-1 lead.
Coming out of the break, Badawiya needed only five minutes to record her first collegiate brace for the Lancers. The junior forward put a cross into the box that bounced around and found its way into the back of the net, giving the Lancers a 3-1 advantage.

Kacie Dennis put the icing on the cake in the 83rd minute, as the sophomore scored her first collegiate goal of her career. The sequence started on a Badawiya attempt that was blocked by the goalie. Dennis grabbed the rebound, moved it to her left foot, and sent a ball curving to the upper right-hand corner for the fourth goal of the game.

The Mustangs ended the game with a penalty kick that left the scoreboard showing 4-2 in favor of the Lancers.
"We've made good strides in training and games recently, it was great to see the team rewarded for their work today with this result," St. Clair added. "As a young team, games like this can be a great tool of refinement, helping us continue to mature as a group in preparation for conference play. Our focus now shifts to Pacific for next Saturday."
Next weekend marks the final non-conference opponent for the Lancers before they start Western Athletic Conference play. The Lancers will end their homestand with a match against Pacific on Saturday, Sept. 28, at noon.
