Longhorns Outlast Lancers in Mexico
2/13/2020 8:46:00 PM | Softball
The Longhorns came into the match up having run-ruled every opponent they had faced in 2020, not yet seeing a seventh inning. The Lancers were unfazed.
Each team stranded a runner in the first inning, and the Longhorns took an early lead in the second on an RBI single to right center. The inning ended when a Texas baserunner interfered with CBU's second baseman Abby Robertson, counting as the third out.
Brittany Galvez would make her way to third in the top of the third inning, but with two outs the inning ended before the Lancers could capitalize.
Texas scored three more runs on a pair of doubles in the bottom of the fourth inning, which would prove to be the final tally. The Lancers held the nation's most potent offense to just four runs and nine hits after Texas opened the season averaging 13 runs and 13.3 hits per game.
Caitlyn Lloyd would tally her first triple of the season, but like Galvez it came with limited possibilities and two outs. The hit moved her up the career ranks as she sits in third place all-time with 12 triples.

Defensively, the Lancers showed they belonged with a pair of great outs during the game. First, Molly Kolander held onto a huge out in the bottom of the third inning after colliding with shortstop Ali Belloc in foul territory, the out was the first of the inning and helped strand a runner at second.

The second play was conducted by Belloc, who turned a double-play with Amanda Argomaniz that saved a pair of runs that likely scores later in the inning.
Combined, Amanda Hernandez and Giana Lopez threw six strong innings, stranding seven Longhorns on-base and walking just one Texas player. Lopez came into the game for late relief and was challenged immediately. With a runner on second and no outs, Lopez faced off with the NCAA RBI leader and reigning NFCA National Player of the Week. Lopez needed just four pitches to strikeout the Longhorn, her first of two K's in the frame.➿
