Lancers Erupt for Season-High 18 Hits, Runs

The Lancers showed off their speed, defense, offense and pitching in an 18-2 win over the Huskies. It was a season-high in runs scored and hits (18) for CBU. Nick Plaia, Ulises Caballero and Chad Castillo all had three hits on the night, while Andrew Jurado and CJ Masciel both had two hits.

Not to be forgotten was Bryan Pope's impressive start. The junior took a perfect game into the sixth inning and finished with a quality start, as he went seven strong in which he allowed just one hit, one earned run and struck out a career-high eight. Christian Culpepper and Grant King threw the final two innings for the Lancers and did not give up a run, with King throwing a 1-2-3 ninth.
The Lancers stole six bases in the game. Caballero had two to his credit, while Plaia, Harrison Spohn, Castillo and Masciel had one each. It made for quite the debut for Masciel, a true freshman, in not only his first-ever appearance but first start for CBU.

It brings CBU's record to 3-5 on the year and drops Houston Baptist to 2-8. The Lancers and Huskies will continue their series at Totman Stadium on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at noon.
CBU got off to a great start Friday, with the help of three web gems and three runs in the first two innings. Masciel recorded his first career web gem on his first fielding attempt, while John Glenn ended the first inning with a great diving stab and flip at first.

Defense fueled into offense, as Plaia led off the bottom of the first with a single the other way. The senior went on to steal second, took third on a wild pitch and then scored on a single from Caballero. Castillo plated Glenn, who walked his way on base, with a full-count, two-out single for the second run.
A perfectly executed double steal then allowed Caballero to score for a 3-0 Lancer lead going into the second inning.

CBU tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run triple that was Masciel's first career hit and a RBI double from Plaia. The Lancers batted around in the sixth and seventh innings, as they scored a combined 11 runs over those two frames.

Six runs scored in the sixth, which featured RBI doubles from Andrew Jurado, Jeff Bruyntjens, Glenn and a two-run homer for Caballero. The Lancers tacked on seven more runs in the seventh on a pinch-hit RBI single from Kyle Oyama, bases-loaded walk to Spohn and run-scoring singles from Castillo and Damon Keith. Grady Tuohy capped the Lancers' scoring with his first hit and RBI of the season in the eighth inning.
