The Lancers won Thursday night's opener, 3-2 on a walk-off sacrifice fly from Abby Robertson in the eighth inning and another dominant pitching performance from Kerisa Viramontes. CBU got up early on the Spartans of the Big Ten Conference, and finished them late as they plated seven Lancers in the bottom of the sixth to seal the series sweep in Riverside.
It was Viramontes again, this time in relief, shutting down the Spartans from the circle, allowing just one hit in 1.1 innings of game two.
CBU has won three of its last four games to improve to 9-13, while MSU drops to 5-13.
GAME 1: CBU 3 - MSU 2 (8 innings)
An outstanding pitching performance from Viramontes, solid defensive play and timely execution on offense led CBU to its first win Thursday. It marked the second game in a row the Lancers won on an extra-inning walk-off at Funk Stadium.
Viramontes was dominant and took a perfect game into the sixth inning. She retired the first 15 batters she faced before giving up a leadoff single in the top of the sixth. The Spartans went on to score two runs on three hits in the inning to take a 2-1 lead into the final inning.

Caitlyn Lloyd was hit by a full-count pitch to lead off the seventh, and she went on to steal second and took third on a sacrifice bunt from Amanda Argomaniz. Nevertheless, the Lancers were down to their final strike, as pinch-hitter Juju Dorado faced an 0-2 count.
A wild pitch allowed Lloyd to score and tie the game to force extra innings. Viramontes got out of the eighth unscathed, despite a runner being placed on second to start the inning with the international tiebreaker rule in play.
Michigan State moved the runner with a grounder to third in the first at-bat, but a grounder to Ali Belloc at shortstop and a liner to third ended the inning with the runner at third. Molly Kolander started the bottom of the eighth on second and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Makenna Stram.
Brittany Galvez was intentionally walked and Robertson drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly to center field. The Lancers outhit the Spartans 5-4 in the game, with Galvez, Robertson, Mackenzie Budinger, Lloyd and Stram all logging base hits in the win.

Viramontes allowed just four base runners – all on hits, with three of those coming in the sixth. She struck out seven batters without allowing a walk.
GAME 2: CBU 9 - MSU 4
The Lancers' offense got ahead early on Michigan State again in game two, with runs in the third and fourth. Kolander led off the third with a single, stole second and took third on a passed ball before a sacrifice fly from Stram scored her for the first run of the game.
Lloyd started the fourth with a four-pitch walk, took second on a sacrifice bunt from Argomaniz, third on a passed ball and then scored a fielder's choice rip into center field.
Trailing 2-0 in the top of the sixth, Michigan State rallied to take a 3-2 lead. The Spartans scored three runs on two hits while taking advantage of a CBU error to mirror game one and take a late lead. This time however, the Lancers didn't wait until extras to take back the lead.
In a monster bottom half of the inning the Lancers scored seven runs, started with a bunt single from Galvez and capped in dramatic fashion by Argomaniz, who launched her first home run of 2020 to dead center field.

The Lancers will take Friday off and be back at it on Saturday afternoon when they take on the Thunderbirds from Southern Utah at 3:30 p.m. Prior to that, Michigan State and SUU will play a neutral site game at Funk Stadium slated for a 1:00 p.m. start.
