Lancers Secure Series Split with Nevada

Both teams went deep into their pitching staffs in the finale at Don Weir field, but it was the Lancers who won out. CBU outhit the Wolf Pack 14-7, five of its pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts.
Offensively, 10 Lancers had at least one hit in the win, while Kyle Oyama led the way with his first career three-hit game. Harrison Spohn and Ulises Caballero both had two hits in the game, with home runs from Caballero and John Glenn providing big highlights for CBU. Spohn and Oyama also collected three and two runs batted in, respectively, on Sunday.
The Lancers have now won five of their last seven to end the fourth week of the season with a 7-7 record. The Wolf Pack move to 2-11 on the season, but is a storied program coming off a 30-win season. Nevada finished one win shy of advancing to the Mountain West Conference Tournament championship in 2019. It led to UNR Pack being picked to finish third in the MWC, with two first-place votes, in the conference's preseason coaches' poll.
CBU is scheduled to play four more games back in Southern California next week, starting with a mid-week game at the University of San Diego on Tuesday at 6:05 p.m. CBU will then host UC Davis for three games Friday through Sunday at Totman Stadium, with the series opener starting at 6 p.m.

John Glenn hits his second home run of the season, and 23rd of his career to put CBU on the board first in the second inning.#LanceUp⚔️ pic.twitter.com/mPMZuSUwQ4
Glenn kick started the Lancers' offense with a leadoff home run in the second inning. A walk and wild pitch to Caballero set the table for an RBI single from David Martin, which gave CBU a 2-0 lead early.
It proved to be infectious for the Lancers' offense, as they batted around twice in the game. It started with a four-run fourth inning. They loaded the bases without an out on a Caballero single, walk to Damon Keith and a failed fielder's choice. Oyama delivered the big blow of the inning, with a two-run triple, while an RBI single from Rory Smith and bases-loaded walk to Glenn scored two more.

It was all hands on deck for both pitching staffs, as 13 pitchers appeared in the game. Brett Finnel and Matt Amrhein combined to shutout the Wolf Pack over the first five innings, with nine strikeouts between the two of them.
Finnel, a redshirt freshman, made his first career start and threw a career-long 2.2 innings in which he struck out four, gave up three walks and one hit. Amrhein threw the next 2.1 innings and struck out five along the way.
Nevada finally got on the board in the sixth inning, with two runs coming on three hits. The Lancers got both of those runs back and then some, with seven runs over the eighth and ninth innings to take a 13-2 lead.
Nick Plaia got things started in the eighth with a one-out single and Spohn doubled him home to make it 7-2. Caballero led off the ninth with a homer, and CBU went on to score five more runs in the inning on an RBI walk from Plaia, grounder from Chad Castillo, single from Zack Berohn and two-run single from Spohn.
