Lancers Top Highlanders in Opening Game of the Crosstown Showdown

RIVERSIDE – A beautiful, sunny Southern California day was the opening scene for the Crosstown Showdown, but it was delayed by lightning in the bottom of the fourth inning before the teams could finish what they started. Ultimately, it was the Lancers who would prevail, winning 3-1. The Lancers record now stands at 6-13 while the Highlanders move to 0-7 ahead of their Sunday doubleheader on the campus of UCR.

Prior to the pause, which came with one out in the top of the fourth, the teams had managed just one hit between them, but UC Riverside was threatening with runners on first and second after a pair of walks with just one out. CBU starting pitcher Kerisa Viramontes would return from the break to strikeout the final two batters and avoid any damage.

The Lancers wouldn't wait long to get on the scoreboard as Makayla Jordan would reach on an error and Katelyn Mangrello would make the Highlanders pay for that with her second home run of the season, putting the Lancers up 2-0.

The Highlanders would get one back in the top of the fifth, but the Lancers would match that on an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth from Abby Robertson, who would score Ashley McBay to get to the eventual final score.

Viramontes got back to her dominant ways in the circle, pitching a complete game with 10 strikeouts, just three hits and no earned runs.

The two teams will meet again on Sunday for a doubleheader on the campus of UC Riverside. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
