Lancers Complete Tarleton Series With A Nail Bitter In Game Three

STEPHENVILLE – Saturday morning's rubber match between California Baptist University and Tarleton State began slowly as the two teams attempted to get scoring started. When the game was over the scoreboard read in favor of the host Texans, as they claimed the series win with a 3-2 victory. The Lancers return home with a 16-23-1 record and 4-5 conference total while Tarleton improves to 14-25 overall and a .500 conference mark at 3-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams struggled to get their respective bats going early, collecting just two hits in the first three and a half innings. The contest remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when TSU scratched across a pair of runs, plating both on a double down the left field line.
The Lancers recorded their first hit of the contest when fifth-inning leadoff hitter Amanda Argomaniz smacked an opposite field single which was immediately followed by an infield single by Deja Westbrook. A sacrifice bunt would move the runners to second and third which set the scene for Brittany Galvez who would pinch hit with two outs and lifted a 1-1 pitch into center to even the score.
Both teams would get runners into scoring position in the sixth inning but were unable to capitalize on those opportunities. The Texans would quickly find themselves in a two-out situation in the bottom of the seventh, but back-to-back singles, a wild pitch, and a walk would load the bases, putting the potential winning run just 60 feet away. A single to left from the TSU cleanup hitter would put an end to the game in the bottom of the seventh.
Kerisa Viramontes got the starting nod for game three and had another impressive performance in the circle despite the outcome. The loss dropped her season record to 11-8 while she lengthened her lead in the Western Athletic Conference strikeout standings, now with 115, no other WAC pitcher even has 90. The senior recorded nine strikeouts while allowing nine hits and three earned runs in her second appearance in as many days against the Texans. Viramontes recorded five straight outs via the strikeout from the sixth inning into the seventh.
WHAT'S NEXT
CBU prepares for another conference road series as the Lancers will fly to the Pacific Northwest to take on Seattle U in a three-game series next weekend. The Redhawks were picked to win the WAC in the 2021 Preseason Poll and currently sit in second place in conference standings, just a half game behind Grand Canyon who has played one more full series than Seattle to this point. Friday's games are scheduled for 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. while Saturday's finale has a 12 p.m. scheduled start time.
