Lancers Lock Up Fifth WAC Series Victory with Doubleheader Sweep at Seattle U

CBU was sharp in every aspect of the game, as it won the opener 7-4 and took the finale 6-1 with the help of strong offense and pitching performances at Bannerwood Park. The Lancers keep their one-game lead in the conference standings in place as their record climbs to 28-11 overall and 20-3 in the WAC, while the Redhawks drop to 13-24, 7-16.
Jacob McCarvel and Drew Necochea were the standouts on the mound for the Lancers on Saturday. McCarvel squashed SU's comeback attempt in the opener with a five-out save, while Necochea had a career outing with an eight-inning gem in his game-two start.

Offensively, Chad Castillo led CBU with four hits on the day, while Connor Clift and Russell Stevenson had three each. Damon Keith and Nick Plaia had a hit in both games to stretch their hitting streaks to 10 games – the longest of any Lancer this season. Thirteen game hitting streaks would rank top-10 in CBU's NCAA era.
The Lancers will have a chance to sweep their fourth WAC series in Sunday's series finale with SU at 10 a.m. back at Bannerwood Park.

WAC STANDINGS UPDATE
Saturday's doubleheader sweep keeps CBU in first place in the WAC by a game. Its 20-3 league record puts it one game ahead of second-place Grand Canyon (19-4) after the Lopes won both of their doubleheader games at third-place Sacramento State (16-11) Saturday. The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley lost both of its games to NM State on Saturday but is still in fourth place at 13-10.
GAME ONE
Stevenson helped lead the Lancers to victory in Saturday's opener, as he went 2-for-3 with four runs batted in on a pair of two-RBI doubles. CBU also got three hits from Castillo and two-hit games from Harrison Spohn, Clift and Mitchel Simon as it logged 13 hits in the game.

McCarvel closed out the Redhawks on the mound, as he recorded the final five outs for his second save of the season. He was perfect and struck out three over 2.1 innings.
The Lancers got off to another fast start with a three-run first inning on an infield RBI single from Plaia and Stevenson's first two-run double. Both knocks came with two outs. CBU piled on four more runs for a 7-0 lead in the third on Stevenson's second RBI double, an error and RBI single from Simon.
Seattle U made things interesting with a four-run fourth, but that capped the scoring as McCarvel put a stop to the Redhawks. He was called upon with two runners on and two outs in the fifth and quickly got a flyout to keep the Lancers up 7-4. He proceeded to retire the Redhawks 1-2-3 in the sixth and seventh.
Bryan Pope earned his sixth win of the season in the start. He was perfect through the first eight batters before he was touched up for all four runs in the fourth inning.
GAME TWO
Necochea was the standout of game two as he allowed just five base runners on three hits and two walks over eight innings. He retired the Redhawks in order in the first, second, fourth, fifth, seventh and eighth innings.

Offense was spread around, as eight Lancers combined for nine hits as Glenn had a team-high two. CBU scored first again with two runs in the third. Clift drew a walk to leadoff the inning and a one-out double from Garret Ostrander kept the pressure on. A wild pitch scored Clift and a grounder up the middle off the bat of Keith plated Ostrander.
It started a run of three-straight innings CBU scored in to give it a 5-1 lead.
The Lancers tacked on another run in the fourth, almost single handedly thanks to Castillo. He singled to center field to lead off the inning and alertly hustled to second on some lackadaisical fielding. Castillo moved to third on a flyball to deep center from Spohn and a throwing error allowed him to score on the play.

A solo homer from Clift highlighted CBU's two-run fifth, which included singles from Ulises Caballero and Glenn (RBI). The Lancers tacked on an insurance run in the ninth. Singles from Stevenson and Plaia put runners at the corners with one out and a double steal brought home CBU's sixth run.
Seattle U put its first two runners aboard in the ninth, which prompted a move to the bullpen. CBU closer CJ Culpepper slammed the door shut with a strikeout and 6-4-3 double play.
