Ince, Mordechi Lead Lancers Past Matadors

NORTHRIDGE - A top-notch defensive showing and a first-half goal earned a shorthanded California Baptist University the win against a struggling CSUN, as the Lancers topped the Matadors by a score of 1-0 at Matador Soccer Field. The result gets the Lancers back into the win column, improving to 4-1-1 on the year, while CSUN remains in search of its first win, now standing at 0-7 in 2021.
"Other than a few minutes at the end of the first half, I thought we were really good tonight. It felt like a matter of time before we got the second, but then the red card happened which obviously changed things," said Head Coach Coe Michaelson after the win. "There were a lot of good performances, but I really thought, in particular, that David and Antonio were absolute rocks at the back. Down a man for 20 minutes or so, they just continued to eat up everything at the back. Really proud of the professional performance tonight from the whole group to see that one out."
CBU opened the game by pressing the action and putting CSUN on its heels early. The Lancers ripped four shots before Liad Mordechi connected with a Tete Vacas assist to net his first score as a Lancer.
The Lancers would make a few more menacing runs before the halftime whistle but would take that one-goal lead into halftime with them.
The second half was more of the same early on with the Lancers dominating not only time of possession, but doing so predominantly in the Matadors offensive third. With 25 minutes left in the contest, the Lancers would be limited to just 10-men after a second yellow card forced a CBU man out of the game.
Despite the added strain, the Lancer defense would overcome a late push by the Matadors and finish the shutout. Redshirt-sophomore Evan Ince would get the start between the pipes and record his first collegiate shutout, securing the clean sheet with a pair of saves during the match.
Statistically, the Lancers were in charge from wire-to-wire, outshooting the Matadors 10-3 in the game and controlling possession 55% of the time. Vacas led the Lancers with three shots and the assist on Mordechi's goal. Six other Lancers split the remaining seven shots amongst themselves with Danny Garcia taking a pair.
UP NEXT
The Lancers will have a short turnaround and play a game in St. Paul, Minnesota, against a St. Thomas University team who stands at 0-6-1 including a 2-0 loss to common opponent Gonzaga back on Sept. 10. Kickoff is scheduled for 10 a.m. PDT.
