CBU Sweeps Doubleheader, Locks Up Series Win over Mastodons
2/26/2022 8:21:00 PM | Baseball
The Lancers won game one 23-5 and then pulled out a 5-3 victory in the nightcap to improve to 6-0 this season. The Mastodons drop to 0-7 heading into Sunday's series finale. At the end of the game, CBU was one of 27 undefeated teams left in NCAA Division I this season.
CBU put together one of the most dominant offensive displays in program history in Saturday's first win over the Mastodons. The Lancers set NCAA Division I era records for runs scored (23) and home runs in the game (five), and even hit back-to-back homers twice.
It was a much different story in game two, as CBU came-from-behind with a three-run eighth inning leading the Lancers to the two-run victory. The relief pitching of Jared Villalobos was key, as he threw four shutout innings from the sixth through the ninth innings to secure his first career victory on the mound.👀 See anybody familiar? pic.twitter.com/5KAVIEUr45

GAME ONE
The Lancers compiled 19 hits when all was said and done in game one. Josh Paino tied CBU's NCAA-era record for runs batted in during a single game with seven, as he went 3-for-3 with a three-run homer, a double and two runs scored.
Michael Carpentier continued his amazing start to the season by going 4-for-4 with four runs scored and two RBI. Harrison Spohn also had three hits in the game, while David Martin, Chad Castillo and Jake Skipworth each had two hits, as well.

Five different Lancers homered in the game. Paino, Martin and Castillo all homered in the third inning, with Martin and Castillo going back-to-back on back-to-pitch pitches. Skipworth and Carpentier then hit back-to-back bombs in the fourth.

PFW started the game with a three-run first but CBU responded with four runs in the fourth, five in the third and nine in the fourth to take a comfortable 18-4 lead. The wide margin of victory allowed both teams to test their depth, as a total of 43 players, including 10 pitchers, touched the field in the game.
Drew Necochea quieted the Mastodon's bats as he held them to just one run over 6.2 innings in relief. He allowed just one hit, one walk and struck out a career-high seven batters. Ethan Pope also threw a scoreless inning out of the bullpen in which he walked one and struck out another.
GAME TWO
CBU kept the offense rolling into Saturday's final game, as it scored a run in the first and second inning. The first run came on a small two-out rally as Skipworth doubled and then scored on a Carpentier single. Mitchel Simon cashed in the second run with a two-out, full-count single into right field.
The Mastodons took the lead with a three-run fourth, thanks to four hits, including a home run. CBU overcame the 3-2 deficit with the three-run eighth inning.
A one-out single from Skipworth started the threat and a walk to Russell Stevenson and hit by pitch of Ulises Caballero loaded the bases with one out. Connor Clift drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game and then Martin coaxed a four-pitch walk to give CBU a 4-3 edge. CJ Masciel added an insurance run with an RBI single that capped the scoring.

Skipworth finished the game with two hits in the game. True freshman Brandon Downer went five innings in his first start on the mound. He allowed three runs on six but struck out five and did not give up a walk.
UP NEXT
California Baptist wraps up week two of the season and its series with Purdue Fort Wayne with a noon game on Sunday at Totman Stadium.
The Lancers' 10-game homestand continues with their Western Athletic Conference opener, a three-game set with Grand Canyon. The Lopes shared the regular-season WAC title with CBU in 2021 and won the conference tournament to punch their ticket to the NCAA postseason.
