2/22/2022 8:50:00 AM | Baseball
RIVERSIDE – Coming off a sweep to open the season, California Baptist University baseball will host Purdue Fort Wayne for a four-game series this weekend at Totman Stadium.
It will reunite CBU Coach Gary Adcock with Mastodons Coach Dough Schreiber, who served as Purdue's Head Coach from 1999-2016. Adcock was an assistant coach for the Boilermakers from 1999-2000.
The Lancers had quite the opening week, as their three-game sweep of Coppin State set a weekend attendance record for CBU with 2,467 fans. Lancer Nation came out in full force on Friday night, setting a single-game Totman Stadium record with 1,305 spectators. There were 16 NCAA Division I college baseball games played in the State of California on Friday. The Lancers ranked third in attendance among those games finishing ahead of programs such as Fresno State, San Jose State, Stanford and UCLA.
CBU outscored the Eagles 23-10 while testing its depth with 18 position players and 14 pitchers appearing for the Lancers. Overall, California Baptist opens the year hitting .310 as a team and stealing 14 of the 15 bases it attempted. As a pitching staff, the Lancers a 2.67 earned-run average and 30 strikeouts over 27 innings.
The heart of the Lancers' offense was locked in against Coppin State, as Chad Castillo (.615), Jake Skipworth (.556) and Harrison Spohn (.500) are leading the offense and all hitting .500 or better.
No CBU pitchers made more than one appearance in week in, with CJ Culpepper, Drew Necochea and Anthony Silvas all starting a game in week one. All three threw five innings and earned one run or less and maintained a sub-1.00 WHIP.
HITTER OF THE WEEK
Castillo was named the WAC Hitter of the Week on Monday. Castillo opens the season batting .615 (8-for-13) and slugging 1.154 with two homers, a double, five runs batted in, seven runs scored and a perfect 5-for-5 in stolen base attempts after the three-game series with Coppin State.

SERIES HISTORY
This will be the first meeting between these two teams. The Lancers are playing seven first-time foes this season: Copping State, Purdue Fort Wayne, UNLV, Yale, Texas Tech, Air Force and Long Beach State.
MASTODONS AT A GLANCE
Purdue Fort Wayne was swept by Georgia State in a four-game series in Atlanta in week one, but lost two of those games by just one run. The 2022 Mastodon roster features 15 returners from last season and 18 newcomers.
PFW opens the season hitting .209 and slugging .302 as a team. Jack Lang leads the offense hitting .357 (5-for-14) and slugging .643 with a double, homer, six runs batted in and three more scored. Three other Mastodons: Alex Evenson (.333), Cade Nelis (.333) and Cade Fitzpatrick (.250) are hitting .250 or better.
Purdue Fort Wayne ace Justin Miller is one of the most accomplished pitchers in program history. He entered the season with 126 career strikeouts, only 137 off a top-10 standing in Mastodon's history. His career 10.2 strikeouts per nine average is best in program history for a Mastodon who played multiple seasons, while his career opponent batting average of .256 ranks third all-time in program history.
It was Mitchell Spencer who was the Mastodon's most efficient starting pitcher last week, though. He threw five innings of one-run baseball but gave up five hits and a walk in the process to start the year with a 1.80 ERA and 1.20 WHIP. Braxton Wilson and Kyle Maurer were PFW's top relievers in week one, as both threw multiple innings without allowing a run. Maurer threw two innings in which he allowed just a walk.
