CBU Wins Fourth Game in Six Days Against UNLV

Nine Lancers combined for 15 hits in the win over the Rebels, with Jake Skipworth and David Martin each picking up three hits and Harrison Spohn and Josh Paino notching two of their own. CBU improves to 11-4 this season, while UNLV drops to 9-8 on the year.
It's a quality win for CBU over a Rebels squad that was picked to finish second in the Mountain West Conference and is coming off a three-game sweep on the road at San Diego State.

Spohn hit his eighth and ninth doubles of the season to give him 47 in his career. It gives him for the most career doubles in CBU's NCAA era and the seventh most all-time. His second double came with the bases loaded in the eighth and proved to be the difference in the game as it drove in the final three runs to break a 7-7 tie.
Skipworth went 3-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to all 15 games this season in a big way. It's tied for the fifth-longest hitting streak in CBU's NCAA era, which began in 2014.
Martin went 3-for-4 with two runs scored out of the No. 2 spot in the batting order. He now has two three-hit games back-to-back.

Nine pitchers threw for the Lancers in the game. It was Jared Villalobos who secured the win in his team-high eighth appearance this season. Spencer Bengard got a big second out in the top of the ninth, while Liam Rocha closed it out with a strikeout to end the game and secure his first save of the season.

Both teams found themselves tied 7-7 through eight-and-a-half innings after UNLV scored four-straight runs, including three in the top of the eighth.
The Lancers responded with three more runs in the bottom of the inning on a bases-loaded-and-clearing double from Spohn on a 1-2 pitch. Michael Carpentier started the threat with a pinch-hit, leadoff double, while Reeve Holley drew a walk and Marty Munoz laced an infield single to load the bases with no outs.
CBU got off to a very hot start offensively, with four hits scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Lancers' first three batters hit their way aboard in the game, as Spohn doubled, Martin singled and stole second before Chad Castillo drove them both in with a single into shallow right center.

UNLV tied the game with two runs of its own in the second inning, but CBU plated two more in the third to take a 4-2 lead. Martin and Castillo started the inning with a single and walk, respectively. Skipworth scored a run with his second-straight single and then Paino singled up the middle to bring in Castillo.
A three-run homer from Russell Stevenson upped CBU's lead to four runs, 7-3, in the fifth. The Rebels fought all the way back to tie the game, 7-7, in the eighth with a run in the seventh and three in the eighth.

UP NEXT
CBU will stay home this weekend to host a three-game, non-conference set with Yale. The series begins Friday at 6 p.m. at Totman Stadium, continues Saturday at 5 p.m. and wraps up Sunday at noon.
