Softball Begins Hosting Duties Against CSUN and North Dakota State

RIVERISIDE – After beginning the week with a doubleheader sweep of San Diego, the California Baptist University softball team began its co-hosting duties of the Amy S. Harrison Classic on Friday. John C. Funk Stadium saw three games during opening day action, two of which starred the Lancers, who were unable to capitalize on the moment, falling 2-0 to CSUN in game one and then 9-4 to North Dakota State in game two.
Despite the results, CBU is still above .500 with a 10-9 record. The Lancers have another pair of games slated for Saturday, first against Oregon State before meeting up with Sacred Heart.
GAME ONE
The Lancers were unable to start the tournament as they had hoped, collecting just two hits in seven innings against the Matadors. Deja Westbrook pushed a single through the right side in the bottom of the second, and Sydney Soto collected her first career hit in a pinch situation in the bottom of the seventh.
The Matador runs came in the top of the third inning, taking advantage of a pair of Lancer errors. The two unearned scores proved to be the difference in the game as starting pitcher Alyssa Argomaniz turned in another gem, limiting CSUN to just four hits scattered throughout seven innings of work.
GAME TWO
The second game of the night offered more action, but much of it was in favor of the visiting Bison. The Lancers collected six hits against NDSU with two of them leaving the yard, plating all four CBU runs. Senior Tiana Patrick made the most of her first start of 2022, smashing a game-tying three-run homer in the bottom of the second.
Nicole Stark was called upon to pinch hit in the bottom of the seventh with two outs and a six-run deficit to begin to climb. Stark did her job, hitting her first career home run, not allowing her team to go out quietly.
Starting pitcher Jasmine Castaneda was tagged with the her third loss of the year after allowing seven runs, five earned, on five hits in just two innings of work. Amanda Hernandez came in to the game in relief of Castaneda in the third, allowing two unearned runs in one inning before Jordan Schuring closed out the game for CBU.
Schuring came in to start the fourth inning and was the cure for the Bison's hot hitting. She shutdown NDSU over the final four innings, leaving them scoreless while limiting them to just two hits and striking out three.
UP NEXT
CBU will continue tournament action tomorrow with another doubleheader, taking on Oregon State at 12:30 p.m. before their game against Sacred Heart as the 5:30 p.m. nightcap.
