Lancers Walk to Victory In Game One Against New Mexico State

Sydney Soto led the charge offensively by collecting a career-high three RBI's on the night with a run scored while going 2-for-5 at the plate. Amanda Argomaniz and Mackenzie San Pedro both had two-hit games as well, and Priscilla Estrada scored a pair of runs and brought in one.
CBU's small ball brand of attack was the perfect approach against this Aggie pitching staff. The Lancers recorded 11 total hits, all singles, as well as five walks and a hit by pitch. Not only did the Lancers force the Aggies into giving up free bases, they took three free runs from them as well. Tiana Patrick, San Pedro, and Estrada all took four balls in the sixth inning with the bases loaded to secure what would ultimately turn out to be the difference in the game.
Fun fact: Lancers love going for walks, but not long ones, only about 60 feet or so.

The Lancers started game one by chasing the starting Aggie pitcher out of the circle when the first three CBU hitters, Estrada, Nicole Stark and Katelyn Mangrello, all reached base safely. Her replacement did not fare much better, allowing a single to Soto which resulted in the Lancers taking a quick 2-0 lead. Soto would later score on Deja Westbrook's fielder's choice to cap the scoring in the opening frame.

The Lancers would add another run in the top of the fourth to extend the lead to 4-0. Mangrello connected on the first pitch she saw, easily scoring catcher Mackenzie San Pedro from third.

The NM State bats woke up in a big way after that. The Aggies would score their first run in the bottom of the fourth inning off of a solo home run. They followed that up by sending another one over the wall in the bottom of the fifth, this time with the bases loading, taking a 5-4 lead after the grand slam.
California Baptist would not trail for long, posting five runs in the top of the sixth. In total, the Lancers would send 11 batters to the plate during the inning, scoring five runs, three of which were walked in. Soto drove in another run with her second hit of the game and Molly Kolander followed that up with her third RBI of the season to get the Lancers to nine runs.

Relief pitcher Jordan Schuring used 18 pitches to sit down the Aggie side in order in the bottom half of the frame. She would concede a single run in the bottom of the seventh on a one-out double, but she quickly shut the door on NMSU after that by inducing a fly-out and a game-ending ground out. It was Schuring's third win in her last three outings for the Lancers.
UP NEXT
CBU will be back at the NM State Softball Complex tomorrow for the series doubleheader. Saturday's first game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. Pacific start with game two starting roughly 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
