NACOGDOCHES – California Baptist University softball finished the first-ever series against Stephen F. Austin on Saturday with a doubleheader, with the Lady Jacks taking both games, 3-1 and 4-0. Despite the setbacks, the Lancers are still comfortably over .500 on the season with a 16-13 overall record, but still in search of their first win in Western Athletic Conference play after the 0-3 start.
GAME ONE: SFA 3 – CBU 1
This game was primarily a pitchers dual for the first five-and-a-half innings, despite the teams coming together for nine hits. The Lady 'Jacks got a handful of runners in scoring position during that stretch, but quick outs after that kept the scoreboard blank.
SFA changed that in the bottom of the sixth, scoring all three of their runs in the frame. A walk came into score on a homer to left field before a double, a single, and a fielder's choice plated their third run. CBU got the rally started immediately in the top of the seventh as Alissa Montes De Oca singled and was pinch run for by Natalie Elias. Deja Westbrook followed that up with a standup double down the right field line, scoring Elias from first to get CBU on the board. The Lancers would get runners to second and third with just one out, but the hits were not there to finish the rally.
In the circle, Alyssa Argomaniz was strong through five, but the final .2 innings were her undoing, ultimately getting tagged for her third loss of the season. Morgan McConnell finished out game one for Argomaniz.
GAME TWO: SFA 4 – CBU 0
The series finale was similar to the midway game, as both teams were held scoreless for over half of the game. That changed in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings when the Lady 'Jacks sent three over the fence, scoring four runs to take the final lead of the series.
The Lancers recorded one hit in four innings, unable again to put them together to capitalize on baserunners. Starter Presley Hosick left Texas with her fourth loss of the season after giving up four runs on three hits and striking out one Lady Jack.
California Baptist returns home for a six-game homestand that kicks off with a doubleheader against the Summit Leagues' own University of St. Thomas. The Tommies are scheduled for two games on Tuesday, March 21, at 4:00 and 6:30 p.m.
