Lancers Win Hit Fest During Midweek Matchup
3/20/2023 6:53:00 PM | Baseball
After a scoreless first inning, California Baptist opened the bottom of the second with a pair of walks and a single to load the bases. Julian Alvarez then crushed a ball out of the park for a grand slam to kick off the Lancer's lead. USD managed to break through the Lancer's defense to put in two runs of their own with three singles during the third to close the gap on CBU's lead, but a major seven-run rally would tally the score 11-2 in favor of the Lancers.

San Diego and California Baptist have been playing each other since 1987, with their most recent meeting being in May of 2022, where USD walked away with a 9-2 lead. This afternoon's game marks the first time the Lancers have been the Toreros in the last ten matchups.
The Toreros added two more runs in the top of the fourth but were met with a single home run from Dustin Garcia, his fifth of the season. USD continued to fight, though, and with a single and double, the squad tallied three more runs in the sixth to put them within five of the Lancer's lead.

With USD hot on their tail and another two runs in the seventh, California Baptist insured their win with a double to send two runners home from Jake Skipworth. Garret Ostrander's bunt single would bring home another runner, and the eighth inning finished with a single from Josiah Chavez that added another two runs to extend the Lancer's lead by six. CBU closed out the hit fest with a 17-9 win.
In a combined 18 hits for the squad, Alvarez walks away with four hits and five RBI to finish out the evening. Chavez and Carpentier both collected three hits each, while Mitchel Simon extended his hitting streak to 14 with two hits and two RBI against the Toreros.
Lancers return to Totman Stadium this weekend for WAC play against Seattle U, starting on Friday at 6 pm.
