CBU Secures First of Series Against Redhawks

The Redhawks struck first in the top of the second off a double to take a 1-0 lead. The Lancers returned in the bottom of the inning with a five-run rally that started a run off a Dustin Garcia single and a well-placed bunt from Connor McGuire to bring in the second run. Josh Paino would secure a four-run lead with a crushed opposite-side three-run homer.
A bottom-of-the-third rally from Seattle tied the evening match-up, but the Lancers did not relinquish the lead thanks to two ground balls to Mitchel Simon at third base. With CBU batting, Garcia started off in the fourth inning with a triple hit down the right-field line. McGuire's double would score the runner at third and advanced to second on a Seattle wild pitch. Paino earned an RBI with a single that tallied the seventh run of the night for the Lancers, ending the inning ahead 7-5.
After a scoreless fifth and sixth inning, the Redhawks hit a single shot to lessen the deficit to one in the seventh. Garcia would respond for the Lancers with a solid hit to their shortstop that scored two runners, tallying a 9-6 lead in favor of CBU. Jacob Wilson came in clutch for California Baptist in the top of the eighth with a major scoring opportunity. The Redhawks loaded the bases but a strikeout and forced flyout off the hand of Wilson ended the inning, keeping the Lancers ahead by three.
Brandon Downer ended the night on the mound for CBU, clocking in his second save of the season and three strikeouts to finish off the Redhawks. McGuire had quite the night on the diamond for the Lancers, securing three hits and two RBI. Paino ended the evening with two hits and four RBI, along with the three-run shot that helped the Lancers earn the lead in the second.
California Baptist returns to Totman Stadium on Saturday evening at 5 p.m. to take on the Redhawks in the second game of the series.
