RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University softball pushed their winning streak to four on Saturday with two more victories in the Lancers Invite, defeating both teams by the same score from Friday night. The Gauchos fell 3-1 before CBU downed Wagner in the Saturday finale, 8-0. CBU moves back above .500 with a 10-9 record while boasting a four-game win streak.
Alyssa Argomaniz shined brightest in the second game on Saturday, tossing the program's second DI-era no-hitter against the Seahawks. She struck out three during her five-inning effort. She worked her way out of a bases-loaded jam in the third when, with two outs, an error, and back-to-back walks in the third, she kept her calm and forced a fielder's choice for an easy force out at second.
The Lancers also accomplished a feat that is arguably rarer than the no-hitter, as they recorded three RBI triples in the bottom of the fifth inning. Three triples in a game with highlight-worthy enough, but in the same inning, all of producing runs is an incredible accomplishment.
GAME ONE: CBU 3 – UCSB 1
The bulk of this game's action came within a five-out range between the bottom of the third and the top of the fourth innings. Priscilla Estrada, Sydney Soto, and Maya Martinez all brought in runs on hits in the bottom of the third to take a sudden three-run lead.
The Gauchos would respond quickly, lacing back-to-back one-out doubles to plate their first run of the game. Starting pitcher Morgan McConnell regrouped and forced two ground-outs to avoid further damage. McConnell would let up three more hits, but none made a difference in the end, earning her her second victory as a Lancer.
Soto and Alissa Montes De Oca finished the game with two hits, with Soto adding a run and an RBI to her stat line.
GAME TWO: CBU 8 – WAGNER 0
A first-inning RBI double from Soto got the Lancers on the board very quickly, but CBU would need until the fourth inning to put up their second. Estrada put one in play with the bases loaded, scoring Karmyna Becerra to get the Lancers' second score of the game.
The floodgates opened wide in the bottom of the fifth as the Lancers scored six runs on six hits, half of which were the three triples. The game was closed out thanks to back-to-back hit-by-pitches by pinch hitters Valerie Alvarez, which loaded the bases while up 7-0, and Macie Howes, who wore the winning RBI that scored Mackenzie San Pedro for the early finish.
The Lancers spread 10 hits amongst eight hitters, Soto and Kolander each recording a pair. Estrada earned her first multi-RBI game of the season, bringing two in the effort.
The weekend ends with one more game on Sunday against Howard. The Bison will play CBU after having spent the weekend previously playing.
