STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS – Lancer softball claimed its second Western Athletic Conference series win of the season on Saturday, winning a close battle with a seventh-inning RBI by a score of 6-5. California Baptist improves to 21-15 on the year and 5-4 in league play.
Victory did not come easy, as the Lancers were playing catchup from the beginning after Tarleton took a 3-0 lead after two innings. The Lancers leveled the score in the third inning after getting a jump start from Sydney Soto, who crushed her first career home run to make it a 3-2 game. Three batters later, Karmyna Becerra would post her fifth-career triple, scoring pinch runner Ryley McDaniel from first. The Texans would take back their lead in the fifth with a two-RBI double. That was quickly answered by Mata Martinez, who hit her third homer of the season, a two-run shot, again making it a tie game.
TSU threatened in the bottom half of the inning, putting runners at second and third with just one out, but Alyssa Argomaniz induced a groundout and a line out to get out of the inning without any further damage.
The game was won in the top of the seventh, started by a pair of walks that got Priscilla Estrada to second without an out. A fielder's choice got her to third, and a Kayla Lyon RBI brought her home for the game-winning run. Argomaniz would take matters into her own hands in the bottom of the seventh, earning all three outs via strikeout (one looking and two swinging) to send the Lancers home victorious. Argomaniz picked up her fourth win of the year in her short but effective outing.
The Lancers return to John C. Funk Stadium for a single midweek contest as Loyola Marymount University visits on Tuesday, April 4, for a 6:00 p.m. game. After that, CBU is back on the road for another WAC series, this time in Cedar City, to take on Southern Utah University.
