Lancers Clinch Series with 10th Inning Win

After a scoreless first inning, UNLV tacked on a run in the second and a pair of runs in the third for an early 3-0 lead. Josh Paino answered with a double to left center that scored Jake Skipworth. Matthew Darr had a good day at the plate and singled to right field to bring home Cole Howarth, while Paino advanced to third but scored on a Rebel error. Garret Ostrander and Michael Carpentier singled back-to-back for an RBI each and a 5-3 lead.

Shayne Simpson kept the bats swinging into the fifth inning and doubled to center field for a pair of RBI after Paino and Howarth made it home. UNLV picked up some momentum in the fifth, picking up two runs after a pair of singles and cutting the Lancer's lead to two.
In the bottom of the seventh, UNLV tallied another run off a triple that hugged the right-field line. Ahead by just one run and a single out, Jacob Wilson came up big with a strikeout, and Brandon Ross closed out the inning by forcing a ground out to keep the lead. The Rebels continued to fight back against the Lancer's defense and tied the game in the bottom of the eighth 7-7.
California Baptist couldn't keep runners on base in the top of the ninth, but Seth Mattox sat down three Rebels in order to force an extra inning. Simon stepped up in the top of the tenth and gave CBU the lead with a single to left field that scored CJ Masciel. Ryan Delgado closed the game with a pair of strikeouts and earned his second save of the season.

Simon rounded out the afternoon with three hits and an RBI. Three other Lancers also had a multiple-hit game, and Simpson collected two RBI against the Rebel pitching staff. Spencer Bengard tallied five strikeouts from the mound.
California Baptist secures the series overall against UNLV and will return for the final game of the weekend on Sunday at noon.
