Lancers End The Weekend On A High Note with a Five-Run Win Over The Tritons

LA JOLLA - California Baptist University softball took the show on the road for the first time this season, heading south to take on the UC San Diego Tritons in La Jolla. What started as a tight match ended up being a comfortable victory in the end for CBU, who downed the Tritons 8-3 to finish the weekend 3-2 overall.
The teams held each other in check for the first two innings, allowing baserunners but nothing menacing until the top of the third. The Lancer scoring opened in this frame with back-to-back-to-back hits from Priscilla Estrada, Sydney Soto, and Kate Penberthy. Soto's one-out triple scored Estrada from first, while Soto scored easily on Penberthy's infield single.
CBU's Matti Severns tacked on another one in the fourth, bringing in Merissa Borkowski and giving the Lancers a significant three-run lead. That difference would be crucial as the Triotons would score two in the next half-inning, cutting the Lancer's lead to just one.
The Lancers put away any doubt in the sixth when they plated five more runs on RBI knocks from Kayla Lyon, Soto, and Penberthy. UCSD would tack on one more in the top of the seventh, but it wouldn't be enough to threaten the Lancer victory.
Borkowski had another excellent game for CBU, scoring 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs. On opening weekend, the senior left fielder hit .500 (8-for-16) with two RBI and four runs scored. Soto in center field also came through offensively today, going 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBI and two runs scored, bringing her opening weekend run total to a team-leading five.
The freshmen showed up for the Lancers this weekend, as Penberthy and Severns each had multiple strong games for CBU. Penberthy's three RBI on Sunday brought her season total to six, and while it is still early in the year, that total leads the team.
Alyssa Argomaniz started today's game and earned her first win of the season after allowing just two runs on four hits. Presley Hosick saw action for the third day in a row, helping to close out Sunday's win in relief.
The Lancers will have a day off on Monday but then pick up their bats and head east for the Crosstown Showdown at UC Riverside. The Lancers and Highlanders will battle at Amy S. Harrison Field on Tuesday, Feb. 13, at 2:00 p.m. as CBU looks to add to its current two-game win streak against their same-city foes.
