Lancers Fall to Power 5 Rutgers on Wednesday Evening

RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist softball team welcomed Rutgers on Wednesday evening in their second-midweek tilt and ultimately fell to the Power 5 squad 5-0. The Lancers moved to 13-14 on the season, while Rutgers improved to 15-10.

After a scoreless pair of first innings, the Scarlet Knights got things going with a lead-off single that was moved to second after the second batter of the inning reached on a CBU error. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch and both ultimately came home via another error and single to center field. A sacrifice fly secured the third run of the inning for Rutgers, while all three runs remained unearned for Carly Limosnero.

Rutgers picked up a pair of runs in the top of the fifth off CBU pitcher Jazmine Castaneda after loading the bases with a single out. Two flyouts to left field ended the inning for the Lancers, but the damage was done and the 5-0 lead would ultimately be the ending scoreline in favor of the Scarlet Knights. Alyssa Argomaniz picked up the only two strikeouts for the Lancers during the final two innings, sitting down back-to-back batters in the top of the sixth. The Lancers looked to start a small comeback in the bottom of the seventh after Raegan Cheyne singled down the right field line, and ultimately moved to third after a passed ball and a ground out. The runner never made it home, however, after the closing away pitcher shut the door with a forced ground out to end the game.

California Baptist will hit the road this weekend as they head to Arlington, Texas, to take on the Mavericks in their first weekend of Western Athletic Conference play. The first game of the series is set to begin on Friday at 2 p.m.
