RIVERSIDE--- California Baptist baseball fell in their second-midweek tilt of the season on Tuesday evening against Dartmouth College in the two teams' first-ever meeting. The Big Green snagged their fourth win of the year with a hefty 18-12 victory over the Lancers and improved to 4-8 on the season, while CBU fell to 13-8 on the year.
The bats were hot on both sides of the diamond as the teams combined for 35 hits and 30 runs, but Dartmouth had the juice from the very start and plated seven runs in just the first two innings. After an RBI double scored a lone run in the first, a massive six-run second inning pushed the Big Green ahead 7-0. Oddly enough, this was not the first time this season that the Lancers have been down by seven right out of the gates. During the fourth game of the UC Riverside series at the end of February, CBU came back from being down 7-0 and turned a 10-8 victory for the series win. The Lancers nearly achieved that same comeback and managed to knot the game 8-8 in the bottom of the fifth, but ultimately could not complete the comeback for the win.
Dartmouth plated at least two runs in the final four frames of the game and quickly stole back their win with a run off a CBU wild pitch in the sixth inning, and continued to pile on the runs through the ninth inning. The Lancers tried to get things going in the seventh and ninth but were not able to string together enough runs to compete with the massive lead by the Big Green.
The Lancers pitching staff combined for 11 strikeouts and nearly every pitcher allowed an earned run. On the hitting side, Michael Carpentier and Nicholas Dumesnil lead the offense with four hits each, combining for four runs and three RBI. The Dartmouth staff put together nine strikeouts on the evening, while their batters notched 18 hits across a combined 44 at-bats. Both sides did not leave the game without an error, as the Lancers tacked on four while the Big Green tallied three to end the night.
California Baptist returns to Western Athletic Conference play on Friday afternoon as the squad heads to Stephenville, Texas, to play Tarleton in their second WAC series of the season. The Lancers are currently the only undefeated team in conference play and will be looking to pick up another sweep to maintain their first-place standing.
