RIVERSIDE - California Baptist University softball split their action on Friday, falling in the opener to St. Johns before blanking Idaho State 1-0 to finish the day. The Lancers snapped the unfortunate skid they were on and are now 8-10 on the season with one more game left to play in this tournament.
GAME ONE: ST JOHNS 9 - CBU 2
As they have been doing as of late, the Lancers took an early lead as Matti Severns brought in Valerie Alvarez after she laced her first career triple to the wall two batters earlier.
The Red Storm would answer loudly with a two-run home run and a three-run home run in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively. CBU would tack on one more in a bases-loaded situation in the bottom of the fifth, but St. Johns would match the Lancers' loaded bases in the next frame and clear them with one swing. They would cap the scoring with one last plate touch in the top of the seventh.
Morgan McConnell got the start, and her sixth loss of the year in the contest shared the innings load with Alyssa Argomaniz and would come in as relief in the fourth.
GAME TWO: CBU 1 - IDAHO STATE 0
Game two was the definition of a pitcher's duel, with senior Lancer hurler Jazmine Castaneda claiming victory in the end. Jazzy went the distance, throwing her fifth-career complete game shutout, adding four strikeouts to the mix with just four hits and one walk allowed.
While hits were at a premium on Friday night, the only half-inning to record multiple hits was the fruitful bottom of the fifth for CBU. The Lancers would get a leadoff double from Ashlee Annett, who was then pinch run for by Raegan Cheyne. Severns would sacrifice bunt Cheyne to third while the next batter smacked a sac fly to deep right field to invite Cheyne home safely for what would eventually be the game-winner.
Forecasted rain forced tournament participants to switch things up, so no competitive softball will be played on Saturday. Still, the tournament will wrap on Sunday afternoon as CBU is set to face Cal Poly at 3:00 p.m. at Funk Stadium.
