Lancers Drop The Midweek Doubleheader at Grand Canyon

PHOENIX - A new twist to the 2024 Western Athletic Conference season is the addition of a single, midweek doubleheader conference series. Every team will play one of these unique series this year; California Baptist just happened to draw the road end of the stick this year. CBU ran into a Lopes side that had won five of their last seven games and had already built a 19-5 record in Phoenix. GCU kept up their winning ways, taking the series with 7-0 and 8-1 wins on Tuesday night. The results drop CBU to 17-18 on the season while maintaining a winning conference record of 4-3

GAME ONE: CBU 0 - GCU 7

Game one was all Lopes as the home team posted five runs in the first four innings. CBU was stymied at the plate, held hitless until the fifth inning, and knocked just three hits in the game, one in each of the final three innings. The Lopes would tack on two more insurance runs in the sixth before closing the door in the top of the seventh.

GAME TWO: CBU 1 - GCU 8

Game two showed more fight from the Lancer offense, as Kayla Lyon reached on a single in the top of the first. In total, CBU would collect hits in four of the seven innings, adding two more baserunners via walks. Unfortunately, the Lancers would struggle to bring them in, leaving nine on base throughout game two.

The Lancers' lone run came in the top of the fifth courtesy of Kalena Burns, who collected her 19th RBI of the season when Merissa Borkowski scored easily from third.

The Lopes would answer immediately with one in the bottom of the fifth and add three more in the sixth to reach the final score.

The Lancers are back in Riverside this weekend for a three-game series against the Texans of Tarleton State. Friday's doubleheader is scheduled for 4:00 & 6:30 p.m., with Saturday's finale on the docket for 4:00 p.m.
