RIVERSIDE - California Baptist University softball battled two opponents on Wednesday, taking on Fairfield University on the diamond while also racing the weather forecast and predicted rain. The Lancers won both battles, defeating the Stags 8-2 before the rain came in hard at the top of the sixth, and officials called the game. Since the teams completed five full innings of play, the game is counted as a win for CBU, getting them back to 10-10 overall this season.
A quiet first inning was countered by the Stags platting a pair in the top of the second on two hits and a hit-by-pitch. The Lancers answered in a big way, dropping a seven-spot on Fairfield in the bottom half of the inning.
After the leadoff batter grounded out, CBU's offensive clinic began with eight straight plate appearances that reached safely including four singles, two doubles, and two walks. Sydney Soto smacked the first RBI double to get the scoring going, followed by a scoring single from Matti Severns. After a walk and a single loaded the bases, Kayla Lyon laced her WAC-leading 12th double of the season, clearing the bases and putting the Lancers up 7-2. Kalena Burns capped the scoring with a long single down the right field line that scored Lyon from second.
Merissa Borkowski would score the game's final run in the bottom of the fourth. She would reach on a bunt single before stealing second. Two batters later, she would advance to third on a pop fly before taking advantage of a throwing error to steal home for run number eight.
Carly Limosnero got her first start of the season, lasting 2.2 innings and allowing two runs but on just two hits. Presley Hosick would replace her with one out in the third and allow just one hit and walk in 2.2 innings of work, picking up her fourth win of the season.
CBU now turns its attention to their third and final hosted tournament of the season, the Lance Up Invite, which will play host to UC San Diego, Sacramento State, and Harvard this weekend. The Lancers open action on Friday against Sac State and Harvard. Those games are scheduled for 3:00 and 5:30 p.m. but are subject to tournament timing.
