ST. GEORGE - California Baptist University softball finished its penultimate Western Athletic Conference road series in St. George, falling to Utah Tech 5-1 on Saturday afternoon. The Lancers drop to 23-21 (10-5 WAC) on the year but remain in control of the second spot in the conference standings.
The Lancer bats were late to show up to Saturday's rubber match, recording their first hit in the top of the first, but another wouldn't arrive until there were two outs in the fifth. CBU would finish the day with eight hits total, snapping a four-game streak with double-digit hit totals.
Lancer baserunners would threaten with a runner on third in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings, but unfortunately, only Matti Severns in the seventh would score for CBU on a Merissa Borkowski RBI single. Utah Tech did their work early, scoring three in the second and two in the third to reach their complete run count.
California Baptist returns home for the next series, a critical three games against a surging Seattle U team who ended the weekend in third place behind CBU after taking two of three from Southern Utah in Cedar City. That series will be played in its normal Friday doubleheader, Saturday single-game format with stereotypical Southern California weather in the forecast. Friday's games are scheduled for 4:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., but action at Funk will start around 2:00 p.m. with the annual CBU Community Day activities. Lancer Athletics will bring inflatable obstacle courses, bounce houses, and a massive slide to enjoy before the softball begins. Food trucks and lawn games will also be available. The game will still be ticketed at a discounted rate of $5 when you purchase online and use the code "Community" at checkout.
