SAN DIEGO - California Baptist softball kicked off a seven-game road trip on Tuesday by taking on the University of San Diego. The Toreros and Lancers wrestled in a low-scoring affair that saw its fair share of impressive defensive efforts, but a seventh-inning rally from CBU fell a bit short as USD closed out the 2-1 victory. The Lancers move to 20-19 (7-3 WAC) on the season as they head into a pair of conference series in Utah.
The Toreros got things rolling in a loud way with a solo home run in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead that would last until they added one more to it in the bottom of the sixth. Between scores, efforts from Carly Limosnero at the plate and Sydney Soto in center field would save a pair of runs from improving the USD lead.

The Lancers reached safely in four of the seven innings they took to the plate, challenging with two on and one out in the sixth, but would finally score in the seventh. Kayla Lyon led off with a first-pitch double that hit the right-center wall on the fly, advancing to third on a wild pitch. She would score two batters later when Kate Penberthy sent another stand-up double to the right-center fence.

The pinch runner for Penberthy, Cayla Crawford, would make it to third on a ground out, but a strikeout would end the inning and rally before CBU could fully capitalize.
The Lancers will travel to Orem, Utah, to take on Utah Valley in a three-game conference series. Friday's game times have been moved up a few hours to avoid potential weather and low temperatures after sundown, now scheduled for 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Pacific time. Saturday's game remains the same scheduled start time, 11:00 a.m. Pacific.
